Year Round Holidays in Lanzarote

Although the language is predominantly Spanish, Lanzarote, the fourth largest of the Canary Islands, is less than 100 miles off the coast of Africa to which it owes the benefits of its fine climate.

Just 60kms long and 20km wide Lanzarote enjoys a year round warm climate with daytime temperatures ranging between 21 deg and 28 deg and an annual rainfall of less than 6 inches making this an ideal destination for an off-season break using one of a number of with a cheap flight providers that service the destination.

Lanzarote is volcanic in origin, as are all the Canary Islands, with eruptions as recent as the 19th century which gives the Island a “lunar” type landscape which has changed very little over the years due to the dry climate and little erosion. Worth a visit are the caves of Los Verdes formed 3000 years ago during one of the eruptions which include the longest volcanic tunnel in the world, underwater caves that are still not fully explored and one part of the cave which is sometimes used as a concert hall.

Lanzarote has an interesting range of beaches from the white sands of the North of the island, the golden sands of Puerto Del Carmen and the famous black sands of Playa Quemada. If surfing is your choice then the coast in the west is famous for its surfing beaches but with the force of the Atlantic it is a challenge for the more adept surfers and not ideal for beginners or the fainthearted. The white beaches in the north, created by the sand blown across from Africa are also renowned for their surfing and many top surfers can be found riding the waves here.

For other sport lovers Lanzarote is home to Club La Santa which is used as a base by many top triathletes, runners and cyclists who take advantage of the cheap sports orientated package holidays to Lanzarote. As an all year round training camp the climate is perfect and the quiet but challenging roads are ideal for training away from mainland Europe. You can see why its an attraction during the cooler spring and autumn months, particularly for sports stars based in the cooler climates of northern Europe. But you don’t have to be a top athlete to enjoy the sports facilities of Lanzarote as there are also golf courses, diving schools, deep sea fishing, jet skiing and parasailing.

There is a wide choice of accommodation on Lanzarote from a number of 4 and 5 Star hotels to self catering apartments situated in the popular coastal resorts. Puerto del Carmen is the busiest resort with its huge beach, numerous bars, restaurants and clubs to cater for all tastes and ages but also an old town for a glimpse of the past. Puerto Calero is different, quieter with less activities, it is a more exclusive resort based around a marina and has some top quality hotel accommodation.

There are many church festivals in Lanzarote, the major faith being Catholic and there are other festivals most months. The traditional music of the island is folklore music and the popular instrument is the timple, a ukulele type of instrument introduced to the island by slaves in the 15th century, all long before the island became a popular holiday destination. The holiday resorts are only a recent addition, since affordable flights to the island became available. Lanzarote Arrecife airport boasts an exceptional, newly constructed terminal providing all the facilities and comfort travellers have come to expect.

So for an ideal location for a year round holiday, be it activity based or just lazing in the sun, Lanzarote has a lot to offer and is just a 4 hour flight from the UK.

How Lanzarote Became the Island it is Today
Visitors to Lanzarote, the second biggest of the main Canary Islands, may be forgiven for thinking that the island has been a holiday destination for many years, but the reality is very different. Until as recently as 1980 the island was relatively unknown to international travellers. The geographic history of the island is of course dominated by volcanic activity, which caused the creation of the island in the first place. The island, which has been part of Spain since the fifteenth century,...

Reinvention on Tenerife to Restore Tourist Volumes
The main Canary Islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria have enjoyed many years of buoyant tourist numbers, boosted by a number of factors that placed the islands in an almost unique sweet spot as far a the ideal travel destination is concerned. The attraction of a warm winter break has brought visitors to the islands during the off-season months, especially...

Winter Breaks in Lanzarote
As summer changes to autumn, trees start to shed their leaves and daytime temperatures drop slightly, people fortunate enough to afford the time and cost turn their thoughts to a winter break. Best Kitesurfing Locations
The sport of kitesurfing has undergone a remarkably fast emergeance as one of the world’s fastest growing watersports. Kitesurfing can trace it’s origins back to various attempts to harness the power of the wind as a form of propulsion across water but it is only really in the last ten years that the sport suddenly became popular on the back of a functional and affordable design of equipment. That equipment consists of a bi-directional board, effectively a lightweight surfboard, a harness and...

The southern...

Choosing Between the Canary Islands
Choosing which of the Canary Islands to visit is a real dilemma for the winter break tourist. All of the main seven islands, that are located just off the north African coastline, share similar climates, but the major differences lie in the way each of these islands has grown up and the level of urban development progression in each. Some of the resorts on these islands have their roots back in the 1950’s and so exhibit some dated and, for some, unattractive architecture while the resorts that...

Stay at Home Tourism Unlikely to Satisfy
Reading the reports about the dramatic shifts in holiday trends you might expect “stay at home tourism” to be about to take off in a big way. In the UK the devaluation of the British pound against the Euro has seen many people opting to take holidays in the UK this year. Popular resorts in the south of England are experiencing healthy visitor numbers and the once popular British pastime of caravanning is seeing a resurgence. But for how long will these “old style” holidays satisfy the typical...

The Best Features of Gran Canaria
A holiday to Gran Canaria can easily be justified on the weather alone. Its year-round mild climate make a trip there worthwhile at any time and during the cold winters of Europe it’s even more attractive. Gran Canaria may be part of Spain but it’s over 200 miles further away from the Spanish mainland than the Mediterranean is from the UK. So great weather and over 50 kilometers of Europe’s best beaches all washed and warmed by the Gulf Stream should be enough for anyone, but the islands has...
