Tamil Nadu Tour

Located in the southern peninsula of India, Tamil Nadu is full of history, culture, politics and religion. It has busy metros, dense forests, bright green paddy fields in the plains and misty blue eucalyptus in its hill stations. However, no Tamil Nadu tour itinerary is complete without a visit to its main beaches and temples.

Ooty: The main temple in this hill station is the Mariamman temple, which is located near the marketplace. Mariamman is the local Hindu goddess of rain. Locals flock to the temple for worship on Tuesdays and an annual festival where thousands of worshippers show up. The latter is a big contributor to Ooty tourism during the month of April since one can see several devotees test their faith by walking over hot coals.

Madurai: The main attraction is the Meenakshi Amman Temple where you can see over 30,000 sculptures, shake trunks with an elephant, check out the acoustics of a thousand-pillared hall and drop a coin in the wishing tank. Madurai tourism doesn’t end here though. There are other major places of worship like the Kazimar Big Mosque and St Mary’s Cathedral, the Thirumalai Nayak Palace complex and an Eco Park complete with fountains and lights.

Pondicherry: Now known as Puducherry, this beach town has a few shores to let you frolic in sand and surf. On the busy side, boutiques dot the Promenade Beach, while resorts and water sports mark Paradise Beach. On the other hand, Serenity, Quiet and Reppo Beaches live up to their name. Pondicherry tourism season is usually based around the monsoons, when sun worshippers can get their fix of southeastern coastal sunshine.

Chennai: Wake up at dawn to catch the early fish! The fishing boats at Marina Beach launch then and you might get a glimpse of the day’s catch. Later on, the world’s second-largest city beach promenade gets busy with vendors for snacks, families strolling and trinket sellers. A must visit on every Chennai tourism itinerary. However, if you wear a bikini here you’ll get stared at.

Tirupati: This metro is located in nearby Andhra Pradesh, just 150 km north of Chennai. The biggest draw here is of course the Balaji shrine that is housed in the nearby Tirumala Hills. It is considered one of the most visited places in the world, clocking in over 50,000 pilgrims daily. What Tirupati tourism adverts forget to mention is that interestingly, this temple contributes significantly to the world’s wig industry, since so many pilgrims come here to get their hair tonsured!
