Religious Significance of Maa Veshno Devi Shrine

Old beliefs die hard, and if they are about religiousness in India, they never fade away. A land of colorful history with religious attitude, India has always been a prominent center of spiritualism and wisdom. There are many places of religious importance, which not only reflect India’s legendry past but also the depth of faith its people have in their religions. One such place is Shri Veshno Devi Shrine located in Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. The holy city is dedicated to Maa Veshno Devi, and invites thousands of devotees from India and abroad.

There are many legends behind the origin of the temple and the city. To comprehend the history of this divine destination, you need to go back to the Treta Yuga. The entire earth then was anguished by the Asuras (demons) who were killing sadhus, saints and virtuous people unnecessarily. Even the Gods in heaven were awfully strewed due the wrongdoings of demons. They decided to generate a supreme power, in form of a girl, to haunt asuras and protect the earth from their brutality.

Then three divine powers – Lakshmi, Saraswati and Parvati got together and became a divine personality ‘Shakti’ who took birth as a girl named Trikuta at the home of Ratnakar Sagar in South India. Because the girl took birth from Lord Vishnu’s lineage, she got the name as Veshno. Even in her childhood, Trikuta was a divine power, and the fame of her miracle started to spread far and wide. She became so popular that even saint started visiting her adobe to get blessings. After sometime, Trikuta left the home to take penitence on the seashore. She began to implore lord Vishnu at the coast of Arabian Sea. When lord Rama, in search of his consort Sita, reached there, he found a divine power rounding the girl. He asked Trikuta for her introduction and the reason for penance. The girl told him that she had accepted Rama as her husband by heart and mind. Since Rama was already married and was faithful to his wife, he rejected her proposal. But he promised Trikuta that he would come to meet here in some other form and if she could recognize him then he would accept her. It’s believed that Rama came to see Trikuta in form of a monk, but she failed to recognize him as Rama.

Later on, Ram appeared in his original identity and asked Tirukata to meditate amidst Manik Mountains. When the girl was meditating, a selfish tantric Bahirav Nath got to know about here. The tantric chased the girl to know her secret, and even tried to kill her. The girl entered a small cave, and then Bharav Nath did the same. The girl came out of it due to her divine power but Bharav Nath took nine months to get out of it. It’s therefore the cave is known as “Garbha Joon”. Later on the Tirukata beheaded the tantric with such a power that his head landed at a distance of 2kms from the cave. Today, there is the beautiful temple of Maa Veshno Devi at the place of cave and a small temple of Bharav Nath at that very place where his head fell down.

It’s believed that visitors to Maa Veshno Devi get all their wishes fulfilled. And perhaps that’s why thousands of devoted come here throughout the year.
