Destination Gozo

Gozo is an island situated in Malta which is establishing itself as a tourist destination. With around 30 thousand inhabitants, the island is easy to reach by sea or air from Malta Island.

Essentially a series of villages (there is only one actual city in Gozo, the capital Rabat or Victoria), the crime level on the island is very low. Also, due to it's small size it's easy to travel to a lot of locations in a short time with minimum fuss. It's small stature makes travelling to a number of locations very easy. Gozo doesn't seem to have a dish to call it's own, with the food being fresh fish and vegetables mainly, but that does mean that the food is inexpensive.

If you are looking for beaches head over to Ramla Il-Hamra. It stays a lot less crowded than most beaches in Malta because it hasn't been over developed Gozo in general is less developed and as a result , less tacky than the rest of Malta.

Gozo is also the place to head to if you want to learn to dive or to further your diving skills. One of the most popular locations to dive is The Blue Hole. Having won a host of awards for being the most beautiful dive in Europe, it isn't a true blue hole in geographical terms, but don't let that stop you.

For a once in a lifetime experience, go to see the Ggantija temples. The temples are more than 5500 years old and one of the oldest man made religious sites. It is rumoured to have been a fertility site, where people would pray to the fertility gods and figurines and statues. The temples were give UNESCO world heritage site status in 1980.The temples are built in a clover leaf shape, facing south east.

On a sadder note, one attraction in Gozo that is on the decline are the calypso caves. Said to be the site where Calypso entertained Ulysses for years in Homer's Odyssey. The site has become full of litter due to lack of cleaning and so tourist numbers to the Calypso caves have been in decline over the last few years.

If you are looking for a quieter, more traditional side of malta, rather than the more touristy main island, Gozo is definitely worth a crack.
