The 19th Tiger Reserve to be included under the Project Tiger, destined to protect the wild beasts and their habitats, the Pench National Park is strategically located in the central part of India.Situated in the Seoni and Chhindwara districts of southern Madhya Pradesh, some part of the park is also located in the Maharashtra state of India.Spread in an area of 758 sq km, the park is in the lower southern foot of the Satpuda hills and is named after the Pench River flowing through the park from north to south.Rudyard Kipling's classic tale of the jungle boy Mowgli, in the Jungle Book, described almost the entire national park.
Among the less crowded and less visited than the other notable parks in Madhya Pradesh, the Pench National Park, has an untouched terrain filled with dense teak forests, supporting a rich and diverse range of wildlife.Featuring the highest density of herbivores in India, the park houses a good number of Tigers, a main cat species.Being in huge numbers, one can easily spot the king of the jungle.Most frequently observed wildlife includes chital, sambar, nilgai, wild boar and jackal.Other wild animals founds at Pench are leopard, sloth bear, wild dog, porcupine, jungle cat, fox, striped hyena, gaur and chowsingha. Home of more than 210 species of birds, the commonly seen birds, include several migratory ones, along with the Peafowl, Red jungle fowl, Crow pheasant, Crimson breasted barbet, Redvented bulbul, Racket tailed drongo, Magpie robin and lesser whistling teal.
Besides this varied and diverse wildlife, the reserve at Pench is also the home to southern tropical mixed dry deciduous type with lot of fruiting trees.More than 1200 species of plants have been found here, that make a suitable home for hundreds of wild inhabitants to reside in the park.The different species of trees found in the park include Kihamali, Khair, Palas Moyan, Skiras, Tendu, Bija, Achar, Garari, Aonla, Ghont, Mahua, Mokha,Baranga, Amaltas,.Bamboo trees are also spread all over in the park, but it is limited to some portion of the valley.
Visitors coming to Pench National Park must never miss the Safari attraction found here.You should either choose the Jeep or the Elephant safari for best viewing the wildlife found in Pench.You can start your ride in the early morning, when the animals begin their search for food and water.The timings for the safari vary according to the season.
Being tropical in nature, the climate found here is hot in summers and cold in winters.Rainfall begins in the early July and remains there for the next two months.In summers most of the wildlife varieties come outside their natural habitat in want of water and so summer is considered to be the best time to visit the park.
Accommodation is no problem in Pench.Besides luxury hotel s and resorts, you can also find camps and tents.Some of the popular lodgings available in Pench are Baghvan, Heaven’s Garden Resort, Mowgli’s Den, Tiger Corridor and Pench Jungle Camp.
Pench National Park is easily accessible from Seoni, with a mere distance of 30 km.You can reach from Nagpur to the park within two hours as it is only 92 km away.Nagpur is well connected with other major cities of India, and one can easily come here by either air or train.
