Inclement Weather Driving

People are naturally bad drivers. However, it takes skill and a little time required to perfect that skill that we, today, refer to as ďdrivingĒ. Whether you are driving from your apartment to the grocery store up the street or whether you are preparing for an extremely long trip up to someplace like Main, it seems that driving on the roadways has become increasingly dangerous, especially since the invention of the cell phone.

Recently, Iíve been testing out this new theory of mine. It involves simply driving the speed limit. I do not allow myself to go any more than five over the speed limit now, and it is absolutely incredible to see not only how much gas Iíve been saving but how horrible the drivers are out there. Since Iíve slowed down to normal, I actually feel more unsafe on the roads than before. Needless to say, my defensive driving skills are as sharp as ever.

Take entrance and exit ramps on highways, for example. Now, the rules are that if you are in a lane where the traffic entrance ramp is going to be dumping highway or freeway traffic onto, you are supposed to allow at least one vehicle in front of you onto the highway (if it makes sense). But people donít do this. Instead, they would rather run the person who is trying to merge off of the road before theyíll allow anyone to get in front of them. Sometimes youíll get an aggressive entrance ramp driver who will actually race the other driver to get in front of them. It seems to be a vicious cycle.

There are also those drivers who donít care about driving so much as they do with what is going on outside of their vehicle. There is a difference between being alert and aware of your surroundings versus being plain nosy, which will just end up causing you all sorts of problems. If someone has gotten into an accident and is getting the medical attention or police intervention that they need, there is no need for you to slow down the flow of traffic so that you can take a peek. Donít speed, but definitely KEEP MOVING. It is this same notion of 'movement' that may help to prevent you from getting into a vehicular accident someday.

More people get into car accidents each year, and it has been a long known fact that driving in a car is much more dangerous than any other sort of transportation out there. If we can reduce the number of people crowding the roadways with options such as carpooling, RideShare and even biking, it should work in some small capacity to rid the roadways of problems that cause overcrowding. A good way to remember how to drive in bad weather is simple: DRIVE SLOW. For starters, if it is raining outside to the point where you cannot even see, then perhaps it is time to take your foot off of the accelerator this way you don't hydroplane!

Driving During Bad Weather
Many drivers think that they are great drivers until something bad happens. No other time is this true than when there is bad weather outside. For instance, whenever it snows, this is the prime time for people who have SUVs, Jeeps and Pickup trucks to think that they are somehow above the weather and can drive in it without a problem. As a general word to the wise, there is a reason that weather people tell us to stay inside when there is inclement weather (unless of course it's an...

Defensive Driving Part Two
Defensive driving is one of the most important parts of being a safe driver. If you can become a successful defensive driver then you will be able to stay safe on the roads and keep those around you safe as well. Defensive driving is all about obeying the rules of the road, keeping road rage out of your driving habits, and being able to predict or anticipate what other drivers around you are going to do with their cars. Letís continue with our list of the best defensive driving tips around...

Driving Conditions
Driving is a privilege and not a right in the United States and as fun as cruising the highway with friends can be, driving is also a very dangerous activity. Driving conditions are not always suitable for taking trips but sometimes people just cannot avoid taking to the highways and byways because of attending school and going to work. Not every business or school closes down when there is inclement weather, which makes driving a very dangerous thing to do. Driving conditions vary by the...

Driving in Bad Weather
Driving in bad weather is not something that should be done- especially by a nervous driver. However, at some point in each of our driving lives, we will have to get behind the wheel during inclement weather. Bad weather is, for the most part, unavoidable. However, by practicing having better driving skills as well as following a few basic rules for safety, we should be okay. Depending on the area that you live in, snow might be a rarity. When I first came down to North Carolina for college a...

Driving While It s Raining
One of the most dangerous times to go driving is when it's raining outside. So, what are some things that make it even more dangerous? In many states and in many areas of the United States, it never ceases to amaze me how horribly people drive when there is inclement weather outside. I used to be a police officer, and almost without fail, as soon as it would start to rain, we would begin to get calls to respond to car accidents. Nine times out of ten, the reason why the majority of people...

Defensive Driving Part One
If you are heading out on the roads during the winter time, or any time of the year for that matter, you should teach yourself how to be a defensive driver. Defensive driving is an art form and not everyone can be successful at this type of driving. If you are a defensive driver then you should be relatively safe when spending time on the roads. Defensive driving is the ability to know your surroundings on the road, keep yourself safe, keep anyone in your car safe and keep anyone around you on...

Cautiously Driving in the Rain
There is nothing worse than getting caught in the rain when you are driving. And if you are from North Carolina or live in the area, then you know how incredibly dangerous it can be. Just last night, I had to run an errand in the middle of rush hour traffic while it was pouring sheets of rain. Not only that, but there is construction going on in the area that I live in, so I had to really be alert. As I was driving, I could not believe how incredibly bad people were driving. I can understand...

Road Safety
Safety on the roadways is a continuing conversation across the country. Highways, as they become more and more crowded, become more and more dangerous because of high speeds and large amounts of volume. Fatal accidents on the roads have become all too common over the past handful of decades and have taken the lives of many people from as young as infants to as old as senior citizens. Road safety is the key component of any driverís education course as well as the main concern for parents of new...

Bad Weather Driving
I used to love driving in bad weather. As crazy as it sounds, I think I preferred it because it meant that there were usually significantly less people on the roadways and I could sort of have the roads to myself. However, I no longer feel this way because since I have moved to North Carolina from New York, I have found that there are more people who occupy the roads no matter what time of day or what kind of weather is occurring. This is the perfect recipe for disaster. When the weather is...

Getting Around Town
When you are trying to figure out the best way to get around town, the first thing that you have to think of what the possible ways are to transport yourself via the various public transportation options that you have available to you. For instance, if you live in the great state of New York and reside in New York City, then chances are that you will not have a problem finding an alternate way around besides constantly having to use your car. For other areas of the country, getting from place...
