Steel Manufacturing Process

Steel is probably one of the most important metals in the history of the twentieth century, and probably the most important in the XXI century.

Their aesthetic, with its characteristic brightness and hardness and corrosion resistance make it an ideal material for both construction and industry.

Being one of the metals with less seniority, is one of the most important metals present in the world.

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, which carbon is present in a percentage less than 2%.

The steel manufacturing process begíns with cast iron, removing its impurities of this, and reducing the percentage of the principal component of the alloy that is coal.

The main difficulty in the manufacture of steel is its high melting point, 1,400 ° C, which prevents the use of fuels and conventional ovens. In 1855, Henry Bessemer developed the furnace or converter that bears his name and where the refining of iron was carried out by jets of pressurized air that is injected through the molten metal. In the process, gas is preheated by a regenerative process that allows temperatures of up to 1,650 º C.

Alloy steels have not only more desirable physical properties, but also allow a greater range in the heat treatment process, which increases its potential in many fields of industry and construction, with applications as diverse as steel pipes or steel fittings for glass.

Here we can analize some elements that can be used for steel alloys:

Chrome: the addition of the chromium element causes the formation of various chromium carbides that are very hard. However, the resulting steel is more ductile than steel of the same hardness produced simply by increasing carbon content. The addition of chromium extends the critical temperature range.

Nickel: the addition of nickel to the steel expands the critical temperature and does not form carbides or oxides. This process increases the strength without reducing ductility. Chromium is often used along with nickel to obtain the toughness and ductility provided by the nickel and wear resistance and toughness provided by the chromium.

Manganese: Manganese is added to all steels as deoxidation and desulfurization agent, but if the manganese content exceeds 1%, the steel is classified as a manganese alloy steel. Reduces the critical range of temperatures.

Silicon: This item is added as a flux to all steels. When added to steel, produces a brittle material with low hysteresis loss and high magnetic permeability. The main use of silicon is, along with other alloying elements such as manganese, chromium and vanadium, to stabilize the carbides.

Vanadium: is a strong deoxidizing and promotes a fine grain size and also increases the toughness of steel. Vanadium steel is very difficult to soften by annealing, so it is widely used in tool steels.

Tungsten: This element is widely used in tool steels, tools that will maintain its strength even if it goes very hot. Produces a dense and fine structure, providing toughness and hardness.

Steel buildings advantages
Steel is a metal alloy whose major component is iron, with carbon as the main alloy material. The advantage of building with steel is that all walls, windows, doors, roofs, and each of the components of the buildings are prefabricated and fast to be built. A brick building or a wooden structure could take months or even over a year to build. Metal buildings, because they are created with a modular steel construction in a factory, have much less time in the construction site. The construction...

Cooling and lubrication devices for industrial machinery
The cooling and lubrication are, together with the operation and regulation, the most important systems that integrates a instrument and allow them to work under standard conditions of service. Launching of the mechanical elements is essential to lubricate the contact surfaces, while maintaining operating temperatures within Correct Limits. In the design project of a device, besides the fatigue calculation of items such as trees, gears or bearings, it is indispensable to delimit also the...

Lubrication and cooling apparatus systems
All of the machinery tools has two diverse systems, one for refrigeration and one more for lubrication. The lubrication system itself tends, in general, quite intricate and involves a combination of different procedures, as we shall see. The cooling system is autonomous of the previous and focuses primarily on the cooling of the cutting tool or tools. It has a blocked circuit circulation of liquid refrigerant recovery comprising tray, reservoir, rigid pipes, hoses, flow regulators and pump. The...

Carbon Materials and technological advances
Carbon, one of the most abundant element in nature, has the capacity to be combined chemically with itself and with other elements by strong covalent bonds resulting in a variety of structures that enable the development of supplies of Different properties. The carbon materials can be exceptionally solid as diamond or graphite as easily delaminated, very dense, high strength (composite materials carbon / carbon), and therefore proper for structural applications (aircraft and racing cars), or...

Military Materials testing in Military Industry
In military industry, is crucial test the vehicles under dynamic parameters through both movement on the ground and swimming. High temperature testing, for example, is essential: Low and excessive temperature vehicle testing for vehicles and other types of equipment. These low and elevated temperature tests include cold starts of vehicles or other types of equipment with internal-combustion engines; efficiency of heating and air-conditioning devices; vehicle resistance to low and high...

Importance of Mobile Labs in Non Destructive Materials Testing
INTRODUCTION Nowadays the use of mobile laboratories is vital for those situations where needed: • On site analysis and surveillance • Agility and quick response • Logistics cost reduction • Implementation process facilitate Their main duties are: • On field support to a central or bigger laboratory. For sampling and first evaluation analysis, with materials testing. • Working as a full operational laboratory, carrying out all the test and analysis...

Criteria for choosing the cutting fluid in Cooling Systems
Three are the mainly widely conventional criteria for selecting the cutting fluid: - The workpiece material structure, - The tool composition, - The functional conditions of the cutting process. Ordinarily is used mineral oil emulsions in water (emulsions) in diverse percentages depending on the resistance of materials and cutting conditions. For example, emulsions diluted (between 3 and 8% oil) has little power and lubricant are used only for slow work. As increasing the amount of...
