The secret to long drives The Weight Transfer

I don't know about you but I always love stepping up to the golf ball and slamming it 300 yards down the fairway, Fellow golfers always seem to think it's amazing because I'm only five foot 9 and have a very slight build to me. Actually, it's not amazing at all, it's not strength that makes you hit the ball so far - it's technique.

If you can master the technique and make it so your timing is absolutely spot on then you'll pretty much be able to hit 300 yard drives every time you step up to the ball. In an interview with the ex world long driving champion the emphasis was not about going down the gym and adding weight to your bench press, but making sure that you connect with the ball at exactly the right time for maximum leverage and follow through.

Now, let's not get carried away though, club head speed undoubtedly plays a role in producing mammoth drives, but I'd take great technique over great club head speed any day of the week. Let's face it, a 300 yard drive is no good if it ends up in the river!

Here is one tip that I've been taught time and time again for hitting huge drives with relative ease. Weight Transfer.

If you can get your weight transfer sorted so that you move onto the back foot when the club is on its way back and swing through to the front foot when the club follows through then you'll always be able to hit the ball a long way. The power of the weight transfer is evident in any sport that involves hitting something a long way. For instance take a look at the baseball players; if you see a swing sequence you'll notice that they start with their weight on the back foot and propell it onto their front foot as they go for the swing.

Even just throwing a ball the weight transfer is key.

You can practice your weight transfer by putting two clubs on the ground outside either of your feet and do some practice swings. Make sure that at the top of the backswing your weight is over the club on the back foot and then as you follow through you end up over the club at the front. It will feel funny at first because it will be exaggerated, but after a while you'll get used to it and it's a great drill that will help you to take the weight transfer onto the golf course with you and pummel the ball 300 yards!

If you over exaggerate the movement you may feel your body coming through before your arms which usually results in a slice. This just means you have a bit of synchronisation to do before it all clicks into place - it doesn't take long, you just need a bucket of balls down the range.

Here's another tip you can use: On the downswing, concentrate on really snapping your hands through the ball so that you get the explosive power of the wrists. You can practice this with a higher club before you jump straight onto the driver. This added an extra 10-15 yards to my drive pretty much straight away - I had a tendency of gripping the club to tightly and not releasing properly.

That's all for now folks, happy driving!

Driver Golf Swing Tips Hit it Further
The driver is the hardest club to hit the golf bag – not only is it the longest golf club in the bag but It also has the least amount of trajectory which means you have to be very, very accurate when hitting your drives. The good news is that hitting the driver isn't actually that hard when you know how to do it which is why the pros can hit drives 300 yards consistently and get on the fairway in the most situations. I spent the last two months try and add yardage to my drives by following...

Drive the golf ball miles
Driving the golf ball a long way is more down to technique than power – if you look at the professional golfers, they all have the ability to crush three hundred drives, however they seem to swing effortlessly most of the time. This is because they use efficient weight transfer and have excellent timing to make sure that they hit the ball in the same way each and every time. There are actually five main principles to hitting the golf ball a long way, and in this article I'm going to...

How To Drive the Ball Further
I don't know about you but I'm always impressed with a big drive. If someone has hit a big drive and they are in the middle of the fairway then they are at an incredible advantage to the guy who is fifty yards back down the fairway and in the rough. I used to be the guy who was in the rough way back, but I have since been able to improve my distance hugely, and it hasn't been as a result of going to the gym either. Technique is the most important thing you can learn if you want to hit the...

Three Secrets to Crush the Ball Miles
We all love using the driver don't we? There's just something about stepping up to a golf ball on the tee and smashing it three hundred yards down the centre of the fairway – there's nothing quite like it. Unfortunately most golfers don't ever get to experience the 300 yard drive because they just can't hit it that far. Well this article will explain how anyone can do it with a little bit of time and effort. The biggest mistake that people do when trying to absolutely let rip on the...

What to Eat to Gain Weight
Over the years I've trained in the gym with a lot of people and a common question that I'm asked is what they should be eating to gain weight. Really, the whole process of gaining weight is very simple. It's a matter of eat more than you burn; but the method of eating more to gain predominantly lean muscle mass is a slightly more complicated issue in that you need to make sure your macronutrients are in the right ratio such that you don't just get wobbly with excess fat! In this article, I'm...

The difference between Overtraining and Overloading the muscle
Back in my early days when I was just starting out at the age of 16 and weighing around 9 stone, I trained 5 - 6 days a week with incredible intensity. In fact I would literally push myself to failure on every single set that I did. The reason being that it didn't felt I had worked the muscle if I knew I had more in the tank. Of course at that age you don't stop to think about the physiological effects of pushing pushing yourself to the limit day in and day out and what that might do to your...

Muscle Gains for Newbies
Do you remember when you first started going to the gym and trying to pack on muscle? How easy it was - you'd go to the gym every week and you'd almost certainly be stronger adding 5 to 10lbs to your bench press each and every time you trained!!! I'm 8 years into my training now and I can assure you that no longer happens to me. If it did, I would be benching somewhere around 1,000lbs, so it's obvious that the initial rate of acceleration curls off somewhere along the line. But do you...

How to put on weight
For those of you who don't know, about 7 years ago I embarked on a journey to transform my body. As every teenager does, I had insecurities about myself and more specifically my body. Weighing only 130lbs at 175cm tall, I was pretty much the smallest guy in the year and it dented my self confidence greatly. So in my stupidity of youth, I went to the gym Rocky style for the next three years, pretty much training myself into the ground and getting no results. When you are young, you're...

Bulking up fast or slow
When I first started out I was very young and impressionable and as a result was taken in by a lot of the stories that were published in the bodybuilding magazines. I used to read advertisements about people who had literally transformed their body in as little as 8 weeks and it really got me down because I wasn't achieving the same results. I now realise that the majority of the publications on the subject of muscle gain and fat loss are sponsored by the very company manufacture sports...

How to gain weight the Healthy Way
As I was learning the ropes about bodybuilding as a teenager, I had a lightbulb moment when I realised that I wasn't really eating enough and that was the main thing that was holding me back. So I started to drink a bit more milk, eat an extra sandwich per day and take a few protein shakes more than I was used to. In that first week, I gained a pound of predominantly lean muscle mass, which to me at that time was the greatest thing ever. Of course, once you get into the mindset of doing...
