Personal Development Are You Fooling Yourself

? Copyright (c) 2010 Willie Horton

With the continuous and massive growth in sales of self improvement or self help books and the proliferation of personal development websites, wouldn't you think that you would by now have witnessed a major shift in human consciousness - a marked improvement in the human condition? In other words, don't you think, with all this new awareness, that a lot more people should be a lot happier? Sadly, not only is there little sign of improvement, all the evidence points to the contrary - increased levels of worry and anxiety as the economy slips and slides having been hijacked by a small number of people obsessed with their own greed and, as it turns out, their own self-destruction; a rise in anti-social behaviour and violent crime and the ongoing inappropriate behaviour of people, who should know better, on the international stage of politics and international diplomacy.

So, what are all those people who are reading self-help books doing? Perhaps, of course, you're one of them - and you're going to have to ask yourself the same question - what are you doing? Or are you doing anything differently at all? Well, in the course of my work I speak to or meet quite a few of them and, undoubtedly, whilst some are making major strides in their lives, there are many who, as in every other aspect of their lives, are going through the motions, fooling themselves into thinking that their attitude, mental state, behaviour and lives are changing for the better.

It's very easy to pursue a course of personal development and slip into a routine not dissimilar to all your other routines - repetitive, habitual, automatic and ultimately mindless. The moment anything becomes routine, it becomes useless to you in the pursuit of a better life because your subconscious mind is specifically built to enable you do routine things without paying them any attention. As the purpose of personal development is to develop one's focus - a fancy word for paying attention - then routine non-attention will defeat the whole purpose of your striving for a better life. And, so, I come across many people who have convinced themselves that they are developing the mindfulness - but who have ended up simply doing something else mindlessly! I've come across plenty of people who meditate regularly (and, consequently habitually and mindlessly), who tell me that they've never felt as calm and focused in their lives - but, if they were to stand back and take a look at the facts, they would find that their lives are crumbling around them: businesses being let drift on the basis that 'everything is moving in the right direction', relationships where familiarity is breeding daily contempt, people who are seriously unhealthy or overweight or both, people whose lives exhibit none of the concrete results that they should be getting from a proper approach to real personal development - one which is ongoing, evolving and enabling ever-developing personal growth.

If you have begun to pursue the journey of self improvement you should immediately see benefits in your life. These benefits should be concrete and measurable - not just that you 'feel better' about yourself or your life. If you see no benefits, no tangible results in terms of both personal effectiveness and the downstream benefits in your professional, personal and financial life, you are fooling yourself. And the longer you fool yourself the more dangerous it becomes because you will begin to convince yourself that your life is changing for the better when, in fact, you are becoming more divorced from reality. Herein lies at least one of the reasons why we're not witnessing a major shift in the human condition.

Undoubtedly, there are hugely useful and practical personal development resources out there - I believe from the feedback that I get from my own clients that what I enable them do has helped many people quite literally change their lives and that it can enable anyone do the same. I use the word 'can' instead of will because what I and others like me do is provide tools - but these tools have to be put to the right use. There is little point in providing someone with a hammer as a result of which all they do is beat themselves over the head with it! These tools must be used during the moment to moment cut and thrust of your everyday life - not just whilst you're sitting in the lotus position at six o'clock in the morning! Mindfulness - and all the extraordinary benefits that flow from it - is something that has to be practiced within the very fabric of your day - not just in preparation for it. Until you bring what you've learned in your self-help books and personal development courses into the very moment to moment behaviour of your everyday life not only will things not improve, they'll get worse.

Getting Results
Copyright (c) 2010 Willie Horton I hear from quite a number of people - clients and readers of my Personal Development Ezine - who tell me that they have become far calmer, more aware and focused as a result of the various little mental exercises that they undertake to banish stress and move themselves in the direction that they want their life to go. Indeed, I regularly get feedback from some clients who tell me that their lives have changed immeasurably and that they have seen some or many...

Personal Development It s About Doing Things Differently
Copyright (c) 2010 Willie Horton I have no idea exactly how many personal development, self improvement or so-called self help books were sold over the last year - but I do know that it is one of the fastest areas of growth in the publishing world with millions of books being sold every year. I also know that these self help books aren't making a blind bit of difference. How do I know that? Well, turn on your TV, open your newspaper or take a quick glance at the web's chat-rooms and...

What is Personal Development All About
? Copyright (c) 2010 Willie Horton I sometimes get very frustrated (it doesn't last long!) when I see the extent to which Personal Development is hijacked by people whose sole focus is on money. Go on, Google 'Personal Development' - the number of sites that talk about becoming a millionaire, trebling your income, achieving financial freedom! Check out Amazon and there's a plethora of books on the same thing. Sure, people worry about money and the irony is that if you worry about money,...

Personal Development Is A Lifestyle Choice
Copyright (c) 2011 Willie Horton Personal development is a choice that you have to make – again and again. Unlike the clothes you buy, the car you drive, the latest faddy diet or accessory, personal development is for life – literally and figuratively. Personal development is not something that you should dip in and out of – nor is it something that is a once of choice. Not too many people will tell you that personal development requires a daily, lifetime commitment. But it...

How to Achieve Extraordinary Success
Copyright (c) 2010 Willie Horton Think that you're a success? You may need to think again - or, more to the point, you may need to stop thinking altogether and start doing - that's how to become a real success. Real success does not involve hard work, it does not involve compromising one's work life balance and it does not involve wanting for anything. The problem is that people deem themselves to be successful based on the norms of society - and the word norm simply means that enough...

The Fine Art of Effective Communication
Copyright (c) 2009 Willie Horton On many of my workshops, I quote a piece of well known research into the effectiveness and impact of communication. The effect on those with whom we communicate is dictated by body language, tone of voice and our words. Body language accounts for an enormous 56% of the overall effect, tone of voice accounts for another 36% and the actual words we use only account for 8%. I also discuss acclaimed communicators, like Jack Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Barak Obama and,...

Is There a Personal Development Quick Fix
? Copyright (c) 2010 Willie Horton Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could flick a switch to change your life? What if you could simply press a button to achieve your hopes and goals? Well, if you look around the internet a little - not much searching required, you will find personal development websites that suggest that changing your life can be just that easy. Naturally, there's no such thing as a quick fix when it comes to living the dream - otherwise everybody would be doing it. But...

Forget Those Self Help Books
Copyright (c) 2011 Willie Horton I've decided to stop doing my weekly 'recommended self help read' for my Personal Development Ezine readers ' because I've come to the conclusion that self help books don't help! And, yet, if you're a successful self help author you're laughing all the way to the bank. For example, Forbes Magazine has stated that Americans alone spent more than US$11bn on self help books and products in 2008. Rhonda Byrne's bestselling personal development book, 'The...

Changing Your Life It s Up to You
Copyright (c) 2010 Willie Horton A long-standing friend recently recommended one of his best-loved self-help books to me - it was the latest in a long list of his recommended reading. In chatting with him, I enquired as to how he was getting on putting into practice what he was learning from all his reading. It emerged from our conversation that, in fact, he was a life-long student of living life to the full but was unlikely to ever actually try it. As the conversation unfolded, he told...

The Dangers of Personal Development
Copyright (c) 2010 Willie Horton Wherever you are, whatever you're doing, you're surrounded by people who have no idea that their subconscious mind is creating their very own version reality as we speak. All these people - so-called normal people - have no idea that their subconscious mind controls them and, by virtue of the fact that they, in the ordinary course of their lives, exercise no control over their own mind, that they are actually crazy. But you, even by virtue of the fact that...
