What s The Buzz Social Media Can Tell Me What s Happening

It might just be the next step in the evolution of the practical joke. First there was the joke itself. A person takes a quarter and glues it to the sidewalk. They then watch people walking by stop and see it. They reach down to pick it up and almost fall over because it is stuck. They quickly look around to see if anyone saw them and move on if nothing happened. This is funny, so let's share it. Video cameras are introduced and we show our friends. Television shows are created and we submit it. Social media is created and we upload to an open discussion format and let other people talk about it using real-time commentary. Pretty soon the little joke we did just for ourselves has been seen by a million people around the world. If we can get a million people to watch a video, what's to stop us from getting a million people to do the same thing at the same time? Thanks to interactive discussions and open forums, absolutely nothing.

The internet has certainly made the world smaller and more connected, and social media has allowed people with similar interests to connect with people they otherwise never would have known existed. Regardless of what your interest is, there is certainly going to be someone online right now who also likes it. This is true for people who like to have a little fun with the world and let people know that life should not always be taken so seriously. With all that is going on in the world politically and economically these days, a little time out to stop and laugh at ourselves might be a good thing. And if it is done right, it can be the first step in creating an online stir that takes on a life of its own.

It's obvious to anyone who has spent even a nominal amount of time online that far too many people use the internet as their own personal soapbox. They go on a rabble rousing mission to fire up the masses and get everyone all aflutter about whatever is grinding their gears this week. It is unfortunate that so many people seem to have so many unresolved anger issues and feel the need to take it out anonymously on people they have never met. Thankfully there are enough people out there who know that good is always better than bad, so they get online and start an interactive discussion that addresses how best to make the world smile. Before social media, getting a thousand people to suddenly start waltzing in the middle of Grand Central Station was impossible. Now you never know when a hundred people dressed as gorillas will invade your local fast food place, but you do know that even the thought of it is making you smile.

Managing Your Business s Social Profile
It is pretty amazing to think how quickly the business world has changed in the last quarter of a century. In 1990, cellphones and email were still outliers, used by only the very wealthy or very connected. Today, to be without constant access to both makes a person stand out in a crowd. The saturation of computers and smartphones in our lives has affected so many different aspects of business, but none so much as how a company advertises and markets itself. Now more than ever it is imperative...

Social Media Powers The Passion And The Politics Of the Olympics
As much as it idealized something that harkens back three thousand years and it is supposed to be a pure endeavor of human achievement every four years that supersedes the world around it, politics have always played a part in the Olympic Games. From Hitler refusing to shake Jesse Owens's hand in 1936 to the tit-for-tat boycotting of the 1980 and 1984 games by the United States and Russia to the most recent winter games, preceded by the illegalization of homosexuality in Russia and immediately...

Interactive Discussions Let Them Talk About The State of The Re union
Ahhh, pity the poor politician. They are (depending on the color of the tie you wear) either a combination saint and warrior, fighting to get you everything you deserve while protecting you from those who want to work against that or they are a villainous monster that lives in the shadow and is bent on destruction. The truth is most people only think about politicians in general and their own representatives at two times: when they vote for them, and when they announce they are (or are not)...

Crowd Source Funding Management And You
There has been a big change in the way that small, non-traditional businesses have gone about raising capital. It is called crowd source funding. If you are on any form of social media - Facebook, Tumblr or Instagram, for instance - it is possible that you have seen some version of this. It first became recognized as a way for people to raise money for charity, either something typical such as a Walk for Life event or for a specific medical emergency. Now these websites are being utilized by...

Making Your Mark In The Modern World
It has always been a challenge for both small business owners and artists to make a go of it successfully. For the small businesses, they have to compete against entrenched companies with large advertising budgets and established customer bases. Artists need to convince people, usually one at a time, to look at their work, and fight for the attention of agents, publishers, editors and other people whose decisions may be based as much on artistic merit as on how much sleep they got that night....

Negotiating Success With Your Start up Business
Nothing is more daunting than trying to start your own business. Friends who mean well find themselves seemingly unable to keep their mouth shut and tell tales of how hard it can be and how many businesses fail within the first few years, oftentimes taking personal savings and family stability down with it. Nothing can guarantee success of course, but smart business planning and shrewd decisions can certainly provide a better set of odds. The smartest decision a new business can make is to...

21st Century Social Media Reinvigorates 18th Century Wine Festivals
It is amazing to stop and think just how things became popular before mass communication devices like television and radio existed. How did people know what was out there for them to enjoy? A cynic would say that at least back then it wasn't some earlier version of Mad Men telling you what you should like, but the issue still was getting your product out there for people to know about. The easiest way for wine makers to do this would be to organize wine festivals where different vineyards would...

Staying Ahead In the World Of SEO
One of the most important developments to change the face of business since the internet age began has been the creation of the Search Engine Optimization marketplace. Companies have sprung up and helped their clients devise new ways to stay ahead of their competition by maximizing their exposure through internet searches, social media platforms and other apps. In fact, these SEO companies have become so ubiquitous it can now be difficult to determine which might be the best one to hire to help...

Marketing In The New Millennium
At the same time computers were finally getting around to fulfilling their promise and making life easier for everyone, they were also helping to create a brand new industry designed to take full advantage of these new opportunities. The advent of search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo and other companies to replace the ubiquitous yellow pages that people consulted when they were looking for a business meant there was a new way to target customers. And so begat the world of search engine...

Emerging Artistically In The 21st Century
Much talk is made these days about how search engine optimization companies and crowdsource funding websites have revolutionized the way that small businesses compete and thrive in the marketplace. This is certainly true, but these revolutions in business have also helped to spur an equally impressive revolution in the world of art. Regardless of what artistic discipline a person feels a passion to follow - painting, writing, acting, dance or music - the process has pretty much been the same...
