Taking Small Dogs On Planes What To Consider

Many airlines allow small dogs on planes. Each air carrier has its'own specifications, so it is wise to phone the individual aircarrier that you prefer to fly. You can usually get a summary of the rules or requirements. In virtually any case, it is very important to make reservations for your pet, as the air carriers most often have a limit regarding the number of dogs and cats for each cabin. Just about every airline has a toll-free number and web site.

Make sure you take your pet to your veterinarian, no more than 10 days from your departure date to make sure all the vaccinations are current and to get yourself a duplicate of the vaccination records to give the airline ticket agent. At the same time, have the vet make certain your pet is healthy and up to airline travel. Some people think pets shouldn't fly due the altitude differences and staying in a carrier for long periods of time;however, your vet will give you good advice on this issue.

Your dog also needs to have a collar with name address, and telephone number and tags displaying proof of shots. It is also an excellent idea to have your pet micro-chipped , should the collar comes off or your pet gets split up from you. The Humane Society, kennels as well as pet shelters use scanners to read the chips which have been inserted. This procedure is not unpleasant for your pet and isn't prohibitive in terms of price tag. Many times this procedure has proved to be the real difference in locating your pet or losing him permanently.

A carrier is another must. Once again, they vary from a Sherpa (soft exterior with fleece pad inside) to a hard shell dog crate. There should be good air flow and a sturdy luggage tag with pets name, address and contact number ( both house and destination).

On the airplane:

Take a container of water and normal size bowl, as your pet might get thirsty. Drinking water is essential, but take a small amount of food in a zip-lock baggie. Some attendants will allow you to take the pet out of your carrier and place him in your lap; however, as far as we know, none of them allow this during mealtime service, whether or not it's just drink and pretzels. Also, put one of your dog's favorite toys inside the carrier as, like children, they will really like a recognizable item.

Only one more point in advance of getting your small dogs on planes. When going through security, it is necessary that you take your pet out of the carrier and go through security carrying him or her. That said, make sure to put a leash on the pet in case he gets scared and leaps out of your arms.
