Dream Interpreters from the Holy Book

Since the early years of Christianity up until today, Christians of different denominations and sects have had different views and opinions about dreaming. On one side are those who believe that dreams have meanings and that the symbols in dreams can be interpreted. Some would even believe that dreams are messages from God while others would believe that one can foresee the future in dreams.

But if there are Christians who believe in all of these, there are also those who don't. Some Christians would consider dreams as nothing but ordinary occurrences while sleeping. They believe that dreams don't have meaning and therefore, there is no such thing as divine or prophetic dream. Still, others would believe that dreams are created by the devil and therefore, dream interpreters work for the devil.

By tracing the history of Christianity, however, one will see that early Christians do believe that some dreams have meaning and that there can really be dream interpreters. Their biggest basis for this, of course, is the Holy Bible.

The Bible has numerous accounts on dreams and dreaming, especially those dreams that were dreamt and interpreted by famous Biblical figures. Most of these dreams were considered divine or prophetic and were believed to have come from God and conveyed to man either directly or indirectly. In the Bible, however, one can also find accounts of dreams that were considered to have no meaning at all.

The most popular dreams recorded in the Bible were those dreams that were believed to have come from God. Among them are the dreams of Abimelech, Jacob, Solomon, Nebuchodonosor, Joseph, Daniel and St. Paul. Among these dreamers, however, the two most popular are Joseph and Daniel.

Joseph

Joseph is the eleventh son of Jacob (Israel), his firstborn to his beloved and long-barren wife Rachel. While still a young man, Joseph has already started receiving dreams from God; dreams which he was readily able to interpret. It was recorded that the young Joseph told his brothers about two dreams, both foreshowing his future elevation over his brothers. Because of hatred, however, his brothers did not saw this dream as something prophetic. Instead, the dream just heightened their anger for their young brother.

Joseph started interpreting dreams of other people when he got a bit older. While in prison, suffering for the punishment of a sin he did not commit, Joseph interpreted the dreams of a baker and a chief butler. Two years later, his dream interpreting skills was again tested when he was asked to interpret the dream of the Pharaoh.

The Pharaoh of Egypt actually had two dreams that Joseph were asked to interpret. One was about fat and lean klines while the other is about full and withered ears of corn. These dreams, according to Joseph, have the same meaning. According to Joseph, the dream meant that Egypt would have seven years of plenty followed immediately by seven years of famine. Trusting Joseph that much, the Pharaoh gave Joseph the authority to plan things for his people as the dream unfolds into reality.

Daniel

Another great dream interpreter mentioned in the Bible is the prophet Daniel. Daniel is a Jewish hero and the traditional author of an Old Testament book bearing his name. Tracing his lineage, Daniel belongs the tribe of Judah and was of noble descent. At the young age of fourteen, however, he was carried captive to Babylon by Nabuchodonosor.

According to the Bible, the dreams interpreted by Daniel were those of Nabuchodonosor. One of those dreams was that of a mighty tree that the king has commanded to be cut down, and that "seven times" should "pass over" its stump, which had been left standing.

Daniel interpreted this dream as a foretelling of the future punishments that Nabuchodonosor would receive. Daniel also exhorted the king to do works of mercy so that the future foretold by his dream would be avoided.

Christianity's Stand on Dream Interpretation

The Bible's account on the dream interpretations made by Joseph and Daniel clearly indicates that there are, indeed, divine and prophetic dreams and some people are given the power to interpret these dreams. But why, despite these truths, would the Roman Catholic Church still find modern dream interpretation superstitious?

The dreams mentioned in the Bible, particularly those interpreted by Joseph and Daniel were clearly of divine nature. The Church, however, argues that not all dreams are divine so that not all dreams would have an interpretation.

Further, the Church believes that divine dreams are interpreted by God Himself, just as Joseph has told his fellow prisoners that the "interpretation belongs to God." Modern dream interpreters, therefore, cannot possibly interpret a dream by themselves just as they would claim they could.
