Tips For Driving In The Snow and Ice

Getting caught on the road in the middle of a winter snowstorm can be a nightmare. Winter driving conditions can change unexpectedly. Before you realize it, you can find yourself driving in snow and ice. In adverse weather conditions, the safest course of action is to stay off the roads. When you cannot stay home, here are some safety tips.

Winter weather can come in many forms: snow, sleet, freezing rain and ice. Falling snow can reduce your visibility on the road and obscure your view of ice on the road until you find yourself sliding or spinning out of control. Don't assume that your vehicle can handle adverse road conditions. Even a four-wheel drive vehicle can have trouble on snow and ice. If you must travel on icy roads, here are some tips for driving safely:

Always wear your seat belt and turn on your car lights, even during the middle of the day. Headlights make you more visible to other drivers.

Don't ever use cruise control while driving in adverse road conditions.

Allow additional space between you and the car in front of you, and decrease your speed whenever highway conditions are less than ideal. Everything takes longer on snowy and icy roads - accelerating, turning and even stopping. Driving slowly in snow and ice gives you extra time to maneuver safely.

Brake gently to avoid skidding or running into the back of the vehicle in front of you. If your car starts to skid, don't panic. Take your foot off the accelerator and turn the wheel slightly in the direction the rear of the car is skidding. Do not slam on the brakes. Steer gently into the skid until you gain control of the vehicle. There are some great on-line sources that explain in detail how to react if your car starts to skid. Depending on whether you have front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, your response might need to be different. Take the time to read up on this in case it ever happens to you. Knowing how to react could prevent you from serious injury in a car accident.

Be calm and patient when there is snow and ice on the roadway. Don't attempt to pass snow plows or sanding trucks.

Watch out for bridges and overpasses because they can freeze before the rest of the roadway. Even if the temperatures are above freezing and the road is not frozen and icy, bridges can still be dangerous. Slow down when approaching bridges and overpasses and proceed with caution.

Driving in the snow and ice can be dangerous, but using extra caution and slowing down will greatly improve your chances of maintaining control of your car.
