While many drivers make efforts to protect their safety while on local roadways, there is always the chance of a serious car accident. When you've been injured in a crash that someone else caused, you may be entitled to seek damages through a personal injury claim.

To better understand the types of accidents that happen across the state, you may want to take a look at some local crash statistics. This information can show trends in common crashes and reveal the number of recent, fatal car accidents in your area.

2009 Crash Statistics .

These statistics are the most current, as of December 31, 2009. That year, there were 911 fatalities in the state of Illinois. Of those, 832 were the result of a fatal crash.

The types of fatalities involved:

• Passenger cars - 416 fatalities. • Pickup trucks - 90 fatalities. • Utility trucks - 81 fatalities. • Vans - 41 fatalities. • Large trucks - 4 fatalities. • Buses - 2 fatalities. • Motorcycles - 130 fatalities. • Pedestrians - 111 fatalities. • Bicyclists - 20 fatalities.

While the circumstances of the remaining crashes were unknown, alcohol played a role in many of the crashes listed above. In 2009, 332 fatal crashes and 373 fatalities were alcohol-related.

There were 303 fatalities that occurred even when victims used seat belts and proper restraints. A complete lack of seat belts or the failure to use them properly accounted for another 276 fatalities that year. It is unknown whether restraints were used in the remaining fatalities.

The types of fatal crashes that occurred included 479 single vehicle crashes and 88 large truck crashes. Speeding was a factor in 325 fatal crashes. Rollovers were a problem and accounted for 197 fatal accidents. Another 357 fatal accidents involved a roadway departure and 248 were intersection-related.

The Aftermath of a Fatal Car Accident in

Fatal car accidents can be devastating to surviving family members. Regardless of the type of a fatal accident, emotional suffering and overwhelming medical and funeral expenses often follow. When a fatal car accident is the result of someone else's negligence, these expenses may be recovered through a personal injury or wrongful death claim.

If you have been seriously injured or a loved one has been tragically killed in an accident, you may be eligible to receive compensation through a personal injury or wrongful death claim. A car accident lawyer will evaluate your case to determine if you have a valid claim.

Additionally, a car accident lawyer can help collect the evidence that is necessary to prove your case and can provide an estimate on how much compensation you may be entitled to receive.
