Swimming Pool Closing Chemicals Prepare Your Pool For Winter Season

During the warmer months of the year, swimming pools are a great source of fun and recreation. However, as the seasons change and the air temperature drops, pools need to be properly winterized in order to provide them with adequate protection during the off-season. Swimming pool winterization is also important with respect to keeping your pool clean so that spring openings are as straightforward as possible. One of the most important steps in pool winterization involves balancing the winter pool chemicals in the water. By having the correct balance of chemicals you will be preventing corrosion and hard water stains. You will also be preventing the growth of algae while keeping the pool water clean and clear. In other words, using the right winterizing pool chemicals when closing your pool will allow you to protect your investment and enjoy a pain-free spring opening.

While using winter pool chemicals to achieve the right water chemistry for the winter season is extremely important, it is, fortunately, not difficult. This is particularly true when you take advantage of the many convenient winterizing pool chemical kits that are available on today's market. Closing pool chemical kits are available for pools of different sizes and come with pre-measured chemicals. This takes all the guesswork out of using winterizing swimming pool chemicals as all you have to do is add the chemicals to the pool water in the order and fashion described in the kit's instructions. Furthermore, as no measuring is required, the handling of chemicals is reduced to a minimum, which is an important consideration for safety-conscious pool owners.

While different kits are available from different manufacturers and retailers, most winterizing pool chemical kits will contain similar closing pool chemicals. For example, common components of closing pool chemical kits include shock, an oxidizer, a stain prevention chemical and a chemical designed to remove grease and oils from the water. While some kits of winterizing swimming pool chemicals may contain chlorine-based components, there are also chlorine-free closing pool chemical kits available. Chlorine-free kits of closing swimming pool chemicals are becoming more and more popular with pool owners as they are highly effective and yet do not reduce the effectiveness of algaecides or other chemicals and also do not bleach or stain pool liners as chlorine-based chemicals can do.

Chlorine-free winterizing pool chemical kits contain chlorine-free shock and a non-chlorine oxidizer. Chlorine-free shock chemicals kill contaminants such as bacteria and other potentially harmful microorganisms, thereby helping to keep the water clean and safe. Non-chlorine oxidizers also help to keep pool water clean and clear. These winterizing pool chemicals remove carbon dioxide from the water. As carbon dioxide is one of algae's main food sources, oxidizers prevent the growth of algae blooms, which cause pool water to become cloudy and can be very difficult to get rid of once established. Most closing pool chemical kits will also come with a special time-release floater which will dispense the oxidizer at a specific rate, keeping your pool protected from algae growth for weeks after it has been closed.

As previously mentioned, stain prevention chemicals are also common components of kits of winterizing pool chemicals. Stain prevention products are very beneficial closing swimming pool chemicals as they can save significant time and effort. Stains caused by the presence of trace metals in your pool water can be extremely difficult to remove, and it is therefore better to prevent them before they occur. Stain prevention chemicals prevent build up and discoloration caused by metals such as iron and copper by effectively deactivating such elements. While these closing pool chemicals are great for use in all swimming pools, they are particularly ideal for use in pools with well water.

Finally, winterizing pool chemical kits typically include a product designed to remove grease and grime from pool water. Body oils and lotions that are carried into the pool by swimmers can cause stubborn and unsightly scum lines and build up along the waterline. However, winterizing swimming pool chemicals such as Winter Sorb are designed to deal with this problem by absorbing several times their weight in oil and grease. Accordingly, by using grease-removing closing swimming pool chemicals, you will be ensuring cleaner, clearer water.

In addition to kits of closing pool chemicals, there are other closing swimming pool chemicals that can help you prepare your pool for the winter season. These chemicals include non-toxic antifreeze, which will protect your pool's pipes and plumbing. By preventing freezing within the lines of the pool's plumbing system, non-toxic antifreeze also prevents costly damage caused by expanding ice. As a result, non-toxic anti-freeze provides a safe yet very effective way to save on repair costs and to extend the life of your pool's plumbing and filtration system.
