Impotence Treatment

Erectile dysfunction or impotence is a condition characterized by the inability to maintain erection during sexual intercourse. It generally affects about 50 percent of all males at one point in their life. Unfortunately only a few seek medical attention. Individuals suffering from impotence would naturally feel inadequate and lose all desire for sex.

As it happens, impotence is usually a sign of something more serious like an injury or diseases like diabetes, multiple sclerosis and alcoholism. Because of this, it is considered to be a secondary condition and not a disease. It could even be caused by work pressures, frustrations and stress. Other patients experience impotence when they are worried about their sexual performance and become anxious.

Basically, the blood flow to the penis is impaired during an erection and results to impotence. An erection usually involves several events and requires the normal functions of the brain, spinal column, muscles and arteries. Because the disorder can be traced to either physical or psychological reasons, treating impotence is possible. Fortunately, there are treatments currently available for impotence. These treatments can restore a patient's ability to maintain an erection, relieve depression and even improve quality of life.

The many types of treatment available for impotence include psychotherapy, drug therapy and surgery. If the impotence is caused by psychological reasons, the doctor would suggest psychotherapy to help the patient deal with his personal issues and relive anxiety. For impotence that is caused by medical problems, the patient can take oral medication that causes the patient's penis to become considerably engorged. Drug therapy is only recommended for patients with no heart condition.

On the other hand, surgeries done to treat impotence involve implanting devices in the patient's penis. This treatment is recommended for patients with arterial blockages and/or injuries to the area surrounding the crotch. The penile injection therapy is also a popular treatment for impotence. It does not involve surgery and very effective in patients that undergo dialysis. There is also the hormonal therapy, which targets the patient's serum testosterone levels. It restores the normal hormone levels of the patient and improves sexual desire.

Being impotent should not be taken seriously or a sign of losing your masculinity. If you ignore and refuse to seek medical attention, you are further endangering your health. Whether or not your impotence is caused by physical or psychological reasons, it would be best to have a thorough check up to determine exact causes.
