Bursitis can be a particularly painful condition that can occur throughout a number of areas in the body. Bursitis found in the elbow is also known as Olecranon Bursitis and typically arises due to a persistent inflammation within the general area surrounding the elbow. While there is a possibility that the symptoms caused by Bursitis will fade away over time, it can also worsen and spread, which is why immediate treatment is oftentimes necessary and, at the very least, wholeheartedly recommended. Here are 10 specific bursitis elbow treatments that should be taken into consideration.
- Rest and Bandaging The main proponent in eventually ridding yourself of Bursitis inflammation in the bursa of the elbow is to basically reduce the swelling. This is the simplest Bursitis Elbow Treatment, as all it requires is rest and a wrap to cover the swelling with. Resting allows you to avoid placing undue strain onto the elbow, thus allowing it to reduce its swelling over time. You can further protect the elbow area with some kind of wrap or a typical neoprene elbow sleeve. As long as the pain is not too severe, the overall swelling will subside and you can move onto the second phase of treatment, which revolves around the overall curing of the Bursitis condition.
- Ultrasound While a slightly less common Bursitis elbow treatment, an ultrasound can work wonders in alleviating the effects of the Bursitis condition within the elbow. Bursitis is partially caused by a restriction of blood flow within the elbow. An ultrasound works to improve blood flow by sending sound-wave vibrations through the deeper tissue within the elbow, thus warming the affected area.
- Draining the Infection The draining of the fluid within the bursa, also known as aspiration, can be successfully done with a syringe. The syringe is place into the inflamed area in order to draw out the fluid. This form of treatment should only be utilized if it is a particularly severe case of Bursitis.
- Strengthening Exercises Exercise is one of the simplest forms of a Bursitis elbow treatment. By employing a number of strengthening and stretching exercises, you will be able to work on ridding your elbow of the condition. While this is a great way to alleviate pain and possibly reduce swelling, it is likely to only work for those whose condition isn't too severe. If the Bursitis worsens while doing these exercises, then a stronger form of treatment may be necessary.
- Massaging While this Bursitis elbow treatment may not entirely rid your elbow of the inflammation, it can help to drastically reduce the swelling and redness that persists around the bursa. All it takes is gentle massaging of the area around the elbow, particularly the softer tissue. Following this treatment on a consistent basis should definitely help to ease the swelling over time.
- Physical Therapy If you find that the aforementioned strengthening exercises don't seem to be working all that effectively, then it is possible that your doctor will recommend that you treat your Bursitis through physical therapy, which will, of course, require the usage of a physical therapist to help assist in the process. This should work to alleviate all but the most severe of conditions.
- Antibiotic Medication On rare occasions, the symptoms of Bursitis in the elbow will be so severe that they require immediate antibiotic medication to help rid your body of the condition. These medications will be given orally and are generally meant to eliminate the inflammation. There are also times when those that receive this treatment will need to go through multiple aspirations of the bursa fluid, to help keep the inflammation down.
- Injections While drainage of the fluid within the bursa is often used before settling on injections as a form of treatment, a cortisone injection administered by a doctor can help to rapidly reduce the inflammation. Be wary though, as there is a remote possibility that the usage of an injection can introduce an infection to the affected area within the elbow.
- Surgery Surgery is a Bursitis elbow treatment that should only be utilized as a last resort, particularly if the drainage of the liquid within the bursa and a cortisone injection have failed to alleviate the problem. This surgery works by completely removing the bursa and allowing it to regrow over a period of 2 to 3 weeks. The good news is that this surgery is only a small operation that does not carry many risks with it.
- Prescription Topical Pain Cream Prescription topical pain cream is a wonderful and effective treatment that does not put any undue burdens on the user. It is a non-addictive medication that provides immediate relief once spread over the inflamed area.
