Organic Skin Care How It All Started

If you look back over history, you will find that all many ancient civilizations used natural products to care for their skin. Back then, everything was organic, there were no chemicals and plants were the main ingredient for much of their skincare products. The Egyptians used an exfoliant made from Aloe Vera sap mixed with sand and this was then used to cleanse the skin. The sand removed impurities and dead skin whilst the aloe soothed. The people would use this body scrub and then bathe in hot springs. The Romans made use of honey and witch hazel in particular. Honey is known to be anti-bacterial and witch hazel has soothing properties. It was especially helpful for rough or raw skin. Olive oil was used a lot by the ancient Greeks as a moisturiser for skin and hair. Berries were also very popular in ancient Greece. The Greeks would crush the berries and mix them with goats' milk to produce a paste which was then applied to the face. They would leave it on for hours and when it was finally washed off, the skin had a lovely natural and healthy looking glow to it. Berries are high in antioxidants and this makes them very useful in removing toxins. The Japanese, with their love of all things from the sea, made use of a particular type of seaweed to make a paste which was used as a skin cleanser or facial mask to gently detox and purify the skin.

Modern day skincare is big business but many companies choose to use chemicals rather than natural ingredients to make their creams, lotions and cleansers. They have large advertising budgets which makes people think that that is all there is available on the market. However, this is not the case as there are a great many companies manufacturing really good quality organic skincare products. Remember that some ingredients, particularly plant based ones, may be listed in Latin, so do not get confused with Latin names and chemicals. It is easy to find out on the internet if you do a search of a particular ingredient. It is always worth your while doing a little research before buying any skincare product and you can get a lot of information on the internet. Visit the websites of organic skincare companies to see what they have to offer and what ingredients they use and where they source these ingredients. A good company will always be open about what they use and where it comes from. Often you can purchase directly from the company, this can save you much time looking in shops which may or may not stock what you are looking for.

Of course, you might prefer to make your own skincare products. There are many websites with some excellent recipes for you to try. You will be able to source your own ingredients and blend the mixtures yourself. If you have a surplus, it is a good idea to keep it in the fridge to prevent the mixture from spoiling. Many of the ingredients you may well have in your store cupboard already such as oatmeal, honey, milk, yoghurt and olive oil - all organic of course! So you will not have to spend a lot of money buying ingredients. Whatever organic skincare products you choose to use, it will be good for your skin and the environment. If it was good enough for the ancient civilizations, it is good enough to use today.
