The Practice Of Zen Shiatsu The Japanese Art Of Good Health

Of the numerous health therapies to originate from the orient, Zen Shiatsu is perhaps one of the least known. In point of fact, it's a very close cousin of two popular treatments - reflexology and acupuncture. Another name for Shiatsu is 'acupressure', which gives us some insight into the relationship of the two therapies. Acupuncture has been around for many years in Western countries, but Zen Shiatsu much less so. Westerners have a tendency to believe that this form of health treatment is somehow mysterious or magical, but it's solidly based on fundamental medical principles.

Both therapies act on the the energy flowing in channels, or 'meridians' around the human body. It's been shown that this life energy, or 'ki' in Japanese, moves along certain channels, connecting our internal organs and also showing indication of the state of health of the organism. The balanced flow of this life force is important for good health, and if it gets to be sluggish, or stops altogether, then we become sick. Hundreds of years past, Japanese therapists realized that the flow of life force can also be stimulated or blocked by external stimulation, either by needles (acupressure) or by the finger and other parts of the body (called shiatsu).

By the way, reflexology (massage of the feet) is very similar to the practice of shiatsu for the body, and distinct parts of the foot correspond to distinct parts and organs of the body. In the three treatments, acupuncture, shiatsu and reflexology, needles or pressure is applied to either increase or decrease the flow of energy in certain parts of the body, which gives the result of balancing the body's energy. When the energy is perfectly balanced (very rare), we are in perfect health. The next question is crucial to the process - how to decide if the energy is not balanced, and how to press in the correct places in order to reach this balance?

This is part of the art of Zen Shiatsu - diagnosis and treatment. The life force can't be detected of course, so a special technique has been developed to assess the nature of any asymmetry and also specify the treatment called for. The accepted manner to carry out a diagnosis is by examining the state of the 'hara', which in Japanese medicine is the middle of our being. Areas of the mid-section of the body are linked to particular organs in the body, and also have energy meridians related to them. The diagnosis entails deciding which organs (and hence which meridians) have too much energy and which have less. The specific treatment is founded on the diagnosis and attempts to create equilibrium between the strong and weak energy flows.

Principles Of Zen Shiatsu
Though it isn't strictly speaking a kind of massage, Shiatsu is a therapy using touch which acts with the energy flowing through the human body. In Eastern medecine, an energetic force (called 'ki' in in Japan and 'chi' in Chinese) flows through the body and is said to have a more concentrated movement through particular paths or meridians. The basic form of Shiatsu is called 'accupressure'. Poor health can be created as these energy flows become out of balance, a state that can be addressed...

Reiki And Zen Shiatsu Two Branches Of The Group Of Therapies Relating To Energy Flow In The Body
Out of all the alternative health therapies available, Zen Shiatsu is perhaps the most pragmatic and intelligible. Other methods, such as Reiki for instance, take a leap of comprehension and trust to appreciate, but Zen Shiatsu is based on physics, would you believe. Even though the two practices work with energy flow inside the human organism, and how this should be balanced for health, a Reiki therapist tries to channel universal energy into or out of the human organism. You can even pay a...

Alternative Health Treatments And Some Well Known Therapies
The big interest in alternative health therapies over the preceding decade has tended to focus on acupuncture and shiatsu, but these are only 2 of the disciplines related to Chinese medicine. It appears that there has been a public resistance to modern medical techniques, because chemicals (drugs) are used too much, and there are often undesirable consequences of the treatment. Chinese medicine and modern practices vary in various ways, but the most elemental is the way in which the 2...

Differences Between Eastern And Western Medical Concepts
Chinese Medicine is not just one discipline, but a collection of several and includes therapies associated with smell and touch, amongst others. Over centuries, medical treatment in Eastern countries followed a rather different path to that followed nowadays in the West. In our Western culture, we do use preventative medical practices, but largely we send for a a doctor or seek medical help when we're not well, which makes perfect sense to us. In actuality, usually this is our undoing. It...

The Art Of Zen In The Western World
It appears to be a common anthem in occidental countries to go 'zen', and we sagely nod as if we know exactly what Zen is. Except for some faint idea of a calm state, gardens of sculpted sand and pictures of Buddha, most of us don't honestly know. Even those of us that do seem to misread the meaning. The word itself originates from a word in Chinese Ch'an, which is in turn derived from a Sanskrit word dhyana, meaning 'meditation'. So far so good, but of course the definition of meditation is...

Two Events That Changed The Course Of The Second World War
During the second world war, two events had a pivotal effect on the ultimate result - the Battle of Britain and the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Battle of Britain took place in the skies between August and September nineteen forty. After the German victories, the retreat from Dunkirk and the capitulation of France, Britain was alone facing Germany. The Battle of Britain is perhaps the best known battle of World War Two. Solar Hot Water And Photovoltaic Panels Renewable Energy Available To The Home Owner
Generating electrical power from sunshine is particularly interesting, as we use electricity for a great many things in our everyday lives. Regrettably, the solar panels of photovoltaic crystals are not cheap and will be so for the near future, unless significant advances in technology are made. The photovoltaic method of creating electricity has no pollution and is renewable. The little cell units forming commercial photovoltaic panels are a kind of crystal lattice which is manufactured in...

A Brief History Of Kiting From China To Asia
Nowadays, we tend to think of the kite like a child's toy, but this isn't the case. There exists a huge variety of kites employed for lots of uses, even military! There are kites for competition, racing, associated sports such as snow-kiting, and also for eminently practical purposes, such as carrying supplies or radio antennae. Although Chinese Kites are an especially ornate form of modern day kites, China is actually the kite's country of origin. They were first used around 2,800 years ago...

What Is The Product Medical Healing Clay And Does It Really Heal
That is a really good question. It seems as though each time an alternative remedy comes into fashion, a new variation of it is promoted in the market place. Obviously, clay has existed for thousands of years - it's in the planet when all said and done - but can it do the things that folks say? There's no doubt that clay holds some fascinating conundrums and probably many of them are still unknown. These should, and will be, be the subject of further experimentation in the future as medical...
