What Everyone Should Know About Living With Down Syndrome

Even though Down Syndrome is often seen as a disability and people may assume they will have to be cared for their entire lives, those who are affected by it can actually live a normal life. Nevertheless, is can be a challenge to care for a child with Down Syndrome. That's because they will have developmental issues that will have to be coped with and they'll have to be encouraged to find ways to work around living with Down Syndrome. While they can live a reasonably normal life, caregivers will have to make special efforts to foster their independence.

Down Syndrome, or Trisomy 21, is a genetic condition that occurs when a baby is born with more than two copies of the twenty-first chromosome. This extra chromosome can vary from person to person and can cause both physical and development issues. Statistics state that approximately one birth in every seven hundred will have Down Syndrome which means that this genetic problem is the most frequently occurring.

Because of these defects, babies born with Down Syndrome usually have health related issues as well. Diabetes and heart defects are common as well as thyroid issues. These issues can make the needs for care giving difficult even though they are often corrected with modern medicine. Other health issues that may need to be dealt with are Celiac disease, seizures, sleep apnea and even leukemia. It is equally as difficult for parents and care givers as it is for the patient living with Down Syndrome.

Since so many of those with Down Syndrome spend much of their early years recovering from health issues as well as dealing with the developmental issues, obesity can be a real danger. This means parents and care givers have to ensure they're eating an especially healthy diet in the proper proportions as well as encouraging them to exercise regularly. The best way to do this is to have the entire family eating the same foods and exercising as well, as this will show the patient that this is 'normal'.

Those living with Down syndrome will experience learning and socialization difficulties as well. Even though they can attend private or public schools, many will need further support to become acitve participants in society. Because they can become independent later in life, everyone should allow for and appreciate the extra effort and time they need. Giving them a sense of self-worth and allowing them to develop their own self-confidence and self-esteem will enable them to live a full and happy life.
