Emergency Survival Kits Planning Ahead

Preparing for an emergency may not be as tough as you think it is. Think about it! It is all about just stocking up some essential items that might be lying around the house anytime. Securing them in a kit will ensure that they are easily accessible in the time of an emergency. They can cater to individual needs or you can pack one for the whole family depending on how it suits you.

Adequate nourishment

Just stowing away some basics items which can be a huge help during an emergency will get you a long way in the time of distress. While it is a common sense to store food and water supplies, they need to be done smartly in a thoughtful manner. At least a gallon of water should be stored per person on a per day basis. Generally emergency survival kits need to have three days worth of sustenance. Non-perishable food items like canned meats, vegetables and fruits can be great stomach fillers. Granola bars, chocolate, candies, peanut butter are great for instant energy. Fruit juices which have a long shelf life can also add to the liquid content of the kit.

Medical and hygiene essentials

Ladies, infants, toddlers and the elderly have additional needs in terms of nourishment and hygiene so special care should be taken to pack in their formula, diapers and sanitary essentials. Even in terms of medication, general pills need to be accentuated with the special medicines that any family member might be regularly consuming. Anticipating all kinds of injuries, a first-aid kit is a must to help the injured recuperate. It is important to include pain killers, heavy flow bandages, antiseptic creams, burn control, and anti mosquito gels.

Identification and documents

Be prepared for cards not working, so it will help to have some cash in hand. And copies of important documents can help when the authorities take over the situation and when its time to re-settle.

Miscellaneous

Thinking in advance, there is a lot you can anticipate. Emergency blankets and extra warm clothes which can be packed in a compact manner can be stashed in the emergency survival kit in case you live in a cold area. A portable stove, some waterproof matchsticks can help you cook if your home or part of it has been destroyed. Flashlights, batteries, a two way radio and a spare cell phone can help you keep the communication lines alive.
