The Anti Aging Strategies

Copyright (c) 2011 Stephen Lau

Everybody wants to look young and stay young. Unfortunately, you are thinking of yourself as young today; by tomorrow, you may not be so sure when you look more closely at yourself in the mirror. Aging is inevitable, and no one can turn back the time clock. The Creator has genetically programmed everyone to age and to die in order to ensure human mortality. What we can do is to slow down the aging process, so that we may live longer and have a better quality of life as we approach our inevitable end.

To combat aging, we need anti-aging strategies.

One of the most important anti-aging strategies is time. To slow down the aging process, time is of essence. It is important to be concerned about aging as early as possible, so that positive actions may be taken to combat aging, because the effects of aging are cumulative. Dr. Huber Warner of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) once commented: "The problems that lead to aging are cumulative, and the sooner you start correcting them, the better off you are in the long run." So one of the most important anti-aging strategies is to start correcting problems responsible for accelerated aging.

Changing wayward lifestyle is correcting some of the problems leading to accelerated aging. Stop smoking and alcohol addiction. Cigarette smoke damages the immune system. The tar in cigarette smoke is composed of chemicals, poisons, and corrosives, such as hydrogen cyanide and carbon monoxide, which deprive your heart and other organ tissues of essential oxygen for optimum function, in particular, the immune system. Cigarette smoking is one the major contributors to the development of autoimmune diseases resulting from a weakened immune system due to aging. Excessive drinking of alcohol may lead to alcoholism, which damages the liver and the immune system. Smokers and drinkers add at least ten years or more to their calendar age.

Other lifestyle changes you need to make may include sleep deprivation. Do not be a thief of time by sleeping less. Sleep deprivation may lead to insomnia and other health problems further down the road.

Maintaining physical strength is one of the important anti-aging strategies. When you are physically strong, you retard the aging process. Unfortunately, physical strength declines with age. As you become less robust, you have less energy, leading to reduced physical activities and muscle weaknesses; and thus a vicious circle of inertia and reduced physical strength is formed. Immobility is the No.1 cause of accelerated aging among the elderly. Remember, it is never too late to take up weight training to increase muscle strength to slow down the aging process.

Eating right is also one of the anti-aging strategies that you may adopt to retard aging. Food is a double-edge sword: it may give you health, but it may also bring about death of body cells. To stay young and healthy, eat natural and whole foods, not their processed counterparts, such as those that come in boxes or packages in the supermarket. Read food labels: if you see many ingredients other than the food itself, most likely, the food item is loaded with chemicals and preservatives. If you eat right, you become healthier, and you are less likely to see a doctor who may give you a prescription drug, which is also a toxic chemical. Periodic body detox for health maintenance not only protects but also rejuvenates the body.

Stress hormones adversely affect the immune system, leading to disease and accelerated aging. Relaxation of the body and the mind is one of the anti-aging strategies that you can acquire through practice, such as meditation. Adequate restful sleep -- sleep without the aid of medication -- is conducive to body and mind relaxation. Dr. Douglas Whitehead, a urologist, once said: "Giving up on sex at any age can be symbolically giving up on all of life." Maintaining sexual health at any age is also one of the natural potent ant-aging strategies to keep the body fit and the mind sound.

There are, of course, many other anti-aging strategies. What is important is that you must not only look young, but also feel and act young. Do not let it become "the mind is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Your Anti Aging Immune System
Your immune system is an aggressive age fighter: it keeps you younger for longer. Your body is made up of billions of different types of cells, such as brain cells, blood cells, bone cells, heart cells, kidney cells, liver cells, muscle cells, nerve cells, skin cells, and spleen cells, among many others, which constitute your body organs and systems. These cells repeatedly die and replace themselves throughout your lifespan. For example, your red blood cells die and replace themselves every...

Macular Degeneration Prevention Is Better Than No Cure
Macular degeneration is loss of central vision as one ages. It is also called aging retinal disease because it impairs reading vision. Macular degeneration is the fastest growing cause of legal blindness in the United States. Laser treatment can arrest the fast-progressing form of macular degeneration, but does not improve vision or preserve eyesight. Therefore, prevention is the best option. Are you at high risk for macular degeneration? If you are over 65, you are at risk, and the risk...

Prevent Disability with Mobility

If you are physically mobile, you can maintain your bones, joints, muscles, and ligaments in their optimum conditions. If you are immobile, on the other hand, they start to decline and deteriorate. Their degeneration often leads to a host of health problems, including aches and pains, which only further aggravate the lack of...

The American Culture Promotes Accelerated Aging
Accelerated aging is more than chronological aging; it is about the way you live your life, your attitudes towards health and wellness, and your philosophy of life in general. Obviously, if you are 60 years old, you cannot go back to being 40 physiologically. However, putting a brake on accelerated aging can make you not only look many years younger but also slow down your biological clock. The United States is a nation whose culture promotes accelerated aging. The effects of accelerated...

How Overcome Difficulty With Words
Copyright (c) 2009 Stephen Lau Difficulty with words is quite common, especially with those who are advancing in age. Difficulty with words means having problems in word finding, which is a mental activity of selecting or retrieving words from memory. The difficulty lies in a temporary disruption in the mental processing, which naturally declines with age. But difficulty with words may not be an exclusive setback in the elderly: even younger people may have forgotten a person's name at the...

Excess Body Iron
Copyright (c) 2010 Stephen Lau Iron is essential for life. Without iron, the human body cannot function optimally. It needs iron to transport oxygen in the blood to different organs and tissues. In addition, the human body requires iron to burn food and body fat. Without metabolism, there is no cell regeneration. In short, the human body cannot survive without iron. However, excess body iron may not be good for human health. Research has indicated that excess body iron may lead to cancer...

Flexibility Stretching for Health Longevity
Flexibility stretching holds the key to health longevity. When you were young, you might have been very athletic and sportive. However, as you continue to age, you may have become less active physically: instead of participating in sports, you may have become only a spectator. Your sedentary lifestyle only reinforces your lethargy and sluggishness in everyday life. Even if you are busily engaged in running errands for your family, you are exercising only certain muscle groups of your body....

Dealing with Work Stress
Copyright (c) 2010 Stephen Lau Stress is your body's response to increased tension. Stress is normal: you need stress to accept challenges, to concentrate on doing a difficult task, and to make important decisions. Hence, stress is necessary at work. But too much stress at work can be harmful to your health, because it unduly increases your production of hormone epinephrine, and thus wearing out your hormonal glands. Chronic stress can cause your body to undergo long-term physiological...
