Simple steps to follow before laying new lawn

For most people, including myself, the lawn is the most important feature in the garden. If the lawn looks good, then chances are the rest of the garden will also look good. A decision that we all have to make when contemplating making a new lawn is whether to use seed or turf.

I would recommend seeding whenever possible for it costs about a quarter the money that buying turf does, and the preparatory work for both is just about the same. If the area to be grassed is not very large and there are children in the family which would be difficult to keep off seeded ground, then turfing is probably a better choice.

Before you start with laying down new turf or seeds on a new garden, you have to make sure that there is sufficient drainage. A grass area that holds an excessive amount of water will make the grass weak and moss, lichen and other weeds will be encouraged to grow. Mowing is often delayed if the ground is too wet and mud patches become apparent when walked on.

Whether the lawn is to be made from seed or turf, thorough ground preparations are necessary. Once you are happy with the drainage, the next job is to dig over the soil. If the preparation is done in autumn then it is best to leave the soil rough to provide maximum exposure to the rain, frost and snow if are unlucky enough to have very cold weather. If you are sewing the seeds or laying turf in spring or summer, it is important to level the ground.

Levelling is important for obvious reasons; you cannot level the grass once it is there. On the day that you are going to lay down the seeds or the turf, make sure that the weather is good and there is no sign of rain. You then need to rake the soil down and make sure that there are no sizable stones left behind. Firm the soil by treading with the weight on your heels so that it is as even as possible and then rake one final time. This time when you rake, you need to rake at right angles to the last time you did this. Apply a dressing of fertiliser and then leave the soil alone for a further week.

By following these simple steps in preparing your garden for turf or seeds you will have a lawn to be proud of.

Taking care of the edges along your lawn
To make a lawn look really attractive there are various things which can be done. One of these is to finish the edges off really well. I like to see them neatly trimmed. It makes all the difference between a first class and an average lawn. If this is done fairly frequently before the grass gets too long there is no need to pick up the clippings as they will soon wither and mix with the soil. In some cases they can be cut as the same time as the lawn is mown. If the lawn is edged by a paved...

Essential Tips You Need To Know Before Sowing Seeds
There are many different lawn seed mixtures available, for hot sunny environments, semi-shady sites, and for areas which will get very hard wear. Naturally, the finer the grass, the more expensive it is going to be to buy. Where the appearance of the lawn is not a priority as it will be subject to wear from children and animals or general traffic, a good hard wearing mixture is highly recommended. This type of grass will be close growing than finer mixtures and will require less mowing. It...

Why aeration is an important task for every lawn
We cannot all have lawns like bowling greens, but we can go a long way towards the goal by careful preparations beforehand and regular maintenance afterwards. After mowing, probably the next most important part of caring for a lawn, but one which gets neglected, is maintaining the aeration of the soil. In a lawn it is inevitable that the soil gradually becomes more and more closely integrated because of constant mowing and general traffic, particular if there are children and animals using...

Important Tips To Remember When Mowing The Lawn
The most important part of caring for a lawn is mowing. Any stretch of grass which is not mown regularly at frequent intervals becomes a field, a padlock, or pasture land. In order to mow correctly it is important to know the needs of grass. Like any other plant, the grass requires food, water, and air in the soil. It requires these things even more than most other plants, because its growth above ground is being constantly and frequently removed. There are not many plants which would...

Keep your grass green with some essential lawn feeding tips
An essential requirement for growing healthy grass is plant food. Lawn grass, perhaps more than any other plants, requires nutrients to keep it green because its top growth is being constantly removed from mowing. If this is to be done by any other plant, it usually dies completely sooner or later, but grass is remarkably tough and will stand up to this kind of treatment. However, that is all it will do, unless fed properly. There are three very important foods that plants must have in...

Know how to water your lawn properly
Lawn is practically never watered at the time when it begins to need it. It is only when the grass begins to look tired and flabby, after about 10 days without any rain, and of scorching hot sun, that it gets watered. Even then it is usually only a sprinkling, and not the large quantity necessary to supply the needs of the grass. Then because the soil has become so dry, it is difficult for it to absorb the water, and much of it runs off or evaporates. Another reason for watering before a...

Advice on removing moss from your lawn
A major problem on lawns can be moss. Although green and soft to walk on, it tends to die away during the summer if the weather is dry, and is easily scratched up by birds and so on during the winter. So that once it has spread all over the lawn and choked out most of the grass, it does not form a very good substitute. Also, weeds tend to spread to mossy areas. The main reasons for the invasion of moss are poor drainage and compaction of the soil surface, starvation of the grass, mowing the...
