The Versatile Mexican Food Empanadas

Empanada is a word, which means "wrapped in bread" in Spanish and these delicious little pastries are made by wrapping a round dough pastry in half over a filling to make a semicircle. Empanadas make tasty snacks at any time of the day and are popular throughout Latin America as well as in Spain.

Empanadas through History

Mexican empanadas are thought to derive from Galicia in Spain and they arrived in Latin America when the Galician colonists did. A Galician empanada is a large round or square pie, which is served in slices, making it a hearty and portable lunch for workers. Variations of this kind of portable snack include Italian calzone, Indian samosas, and Cornish pasties. Actually most cultures have a kind of "pocket" or meat pie type dish because they are handy to carry around.

Chicken, cod or pork loin are popular fillings for Galician empanadas and these are very popular in Latin America because there are plenty of Galician colonists living there. Both Argentina and Uruguay consider empanadas to be a national dish.

Empanadas, which are also known by a variety of regional names, can be stuffed with many different meat, fish, vegetable, or sweet combinations but mincemeat sautéed with seasonings is an especially popular filling. These pastries are usually baked, shallow fried or deep-fried and they can be a Mexican typical meal. The fried kind are supposed to be eaten hot and the baked ones can be eaten either fresh from the oven, reheated or cold.

Empanada crusts are normally made from water, wheat flour, salt and fat (butter, lard, shortening or margarine). The crust might be plain or seasoned.

Types of Mexican Empanadas

Mexicans like to eat their empanadas whenever they feel like it, making them great fare for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, appetizers, or desserts! These are certainly a versatile Mexican food.

Mexican fillings can include guava, pumpkin, cream, sweet potato, yam, fruit, cheese, seafood, meat, and chicken. The dough is either wheat or corn based depending on the Mexican region. In Chiapas, chicken or cheese empanadas are popular. In the Hidalgo region, empanadas are particularly famous.

These wonderful little snacks cannot be overlooked if you are interested in Mexican food culture and you will find them simple to make if you want to create your own. Empanadas are delicious served hot and the whole family is sure to enjoy whichever variety you make. You can buy frozen readymade empanadas from the store but they are not a patch on homemade ones and no self-respecting Mexican would use thawed readymade pasties to their family!

Empanadas are a tasty treat at any time of the day and they make a welcome change from sandwiches in packed lunches. They have evolved throughout Mexican food history to become one of the most popular and well-known Mexican food staples enjoyed in modern times.

Empanadas are just one of many unique dishes found in Mexican cooking and you will be amazed at how many variations Mexican cooking does offer. The more you find out about Mexican cooking the more you will come to love its wonderful blend of fresh ingredients and new and old world cuisine.

The Many Food Choices With Authentic Mexican Meals
Mexico offers a unique cuisine that is delicious and healthy. Ancestral home to the Mayan, Aztec and Zapotec civilizations, Mexico has a long history in cultivating food. Native staples included avocados, sweet potatoes, corn, beans, tomatoes, peppers, and a variety of squash. For meat, they hunted deer, turkey, quail, and rabbit. Chocolate is a native plant in this area, and was prepared as a beverage for the Aztec royalty. When the Spanish arrived in Mexico, they brought their favorite foods...

Versatile Mexican Food There Are More Choices Than You Might Think
It is claimed that Mexico has the most vast and varied cuisine in the world, after Chinese, which might be something of a shock to Mexican fast food fiends who thought that burritos and tacos were the only kinds of food Mexicans eat. Every area of Mexico has its own recipes and the Yucatan fare is especially flavorsome, with its Caribbean, Mexican, Mayan and Lebanese recipe influences. Some Mexican dishes are spicy but not everything is. Chili peppers are widely used in Mexican cookery and...

Mexican Holidays and the Many Food Choices
Food is an essential component in Mexican holidays and no self-respecting Mexican would celebrate one of his national holidays without enjoying the very best Mexican cuisine and Mexican drinks. One holiday that you might have heard about is Day of the Dead, which is on November 1 and 2. This holiday is when families get together to remember their dead loved ones. Day of the Dead traditions include honoring the deceased by building altars and visiting graves with gifts such as the favorite...

Common Mexican Herbs Used in Cooking
The Mexican spices which most of us think of first are cumin and chili peppers; however, cumin is actually a relative newcomer to Mexican cuisine, which was introduced by the Spaniards along with a few others, which we now think of as integral to Mexican cooking. Other spices including chilies, however, have been a part of the country's culinary scene for many centuries, long predating the arrival or Europeans in the new world. Chilies are one of the most ancient of Mexican spices, having been...

Why Are American and Mexican Food So Different
It is not news that the cuisine of America and the cuisine of Mexico are quite different things. Mexican food recipes, for example are certainly not very similar to those found in America. Strangely enough, Canadian food is rather similar to our own, as is often the case with neighboring countries - so why is the culinary tradition of our southern neighbor so different from ours? Mexican recipes use different ingredients than we commonly see in the average grocery store and create flavors,...

The Many Food Choices in Mexican Culture
Mexican culture is very interesting and combines features from the prehispanic past and the Spanish colonial period. Mexicans are justifiably proud of their culture, history, and ethnicity. Mexican city life is not all that different from life in Europe or in the United States, although some Mexican villages still have more traditional ways. Most Mexicans live in large cities and there are more Spanish speaking people in Mexico than in any other country. The Mexican government recognizes over...

Everything You Need to Know About Mexican Cheese
Most of us in the US have not had much, if any exposure to Mexican cheeses. When we see cheese in Mexican dishes, it is usually familiar types like cheddar or Monterey Jack rather than a queso fresco or cotija. While these common cheeses may indeed pair well with some dishes, they are by no means the only options out there for cooks looking to add a little something to their Mexican recipes. However, Mexico has many cheeses to try for yourself and thankfully; many of these products are...

Looking For a Recipe Why Not Try Mexican Rice
Rice is among the most heavily cultivated of all grains and is the cultivated crop, which is eaten by more people around the world than any other is. In much of Asia, Africa and South and Central America as well as Mexico. It is hard to imagine Mexican cuisine without rice; after corn, it is the most important staple of the Mexican diet, with a large number of Mexican rice recipes being classic examples of Mexican cooking. As central as rice is to Mexican cooking, it is a relatively recent...
