Successful Networking at Seminars Conferences

The corporate world is spending huge amounts of their budgets in attending national and international conventions, seminars and conferences. Could they be missing out on valuable networking opportunities at these events purely through lack of planning? I say yes!

Some of the most valuable networking happens in the most unusual situations. So, you had better be ready when it does happen!

Think about these few things prior to the conference:

Remember to take plenty of your business cards. If you are running low on cards, order more now, don't be caught short. Check with the organisers, how many people are attending. Work out how many people you assume you will meet and have a quality conversation with, the number of exhibitors who may ask for your contact details and then allow for another fifty cards at least. This is one time to always over-estimate!

Take a small notebook of some kind with you. You will find a number of good contacts who may have forgotten to take their cards or have run out. Take down their particulars and ALWAYS follow up with every person you connect with! Don't EVER miss an opportunity to follow up with these people, and keep note of contact times/dates and stay in touch on a regular basis if you can.

Include a highlight pen in your conference pack. Use this to highlight on your program the breakout sessions you wish to attend, important starting times, etc. If you are fortunate enough to be given a list of attendees, highlight those you wish to make contact with. The clearer you are on the outcomes you want, the more chance you have of achieving them.

If it is an international conference, remember your camera. It is far easier to have a photographic reminder of the people you meet, sit with at dinner, attend excursions with, etc., than committing everything to memory. N.B. When you do develop the photos, have two for one prints made and send a copy of the photo to the other delegates you have met. Always include your name and contact details(preferably on a sticker) on the back of the photos and date of the event. It is surprising how often these photographs can help to cement an international relationship. Be seen, get known, circulate proactively!

Take a brightly coloured action plan. Aim to write action bullet points as they come to you during the event. If you don't write them down, it is possible you will forget them.

At the conference:

Where possible, arrive early for all sessions. This will give you an opportunity to plan where you will sit, speak to other delegates prior to the speakers commencing and meet more people. If you arrive just in time, or late, you will have little opportunity to network other than to nod to the person you eventually sit beside.

Select a well lit, central location that will become a meeting place for interesting people you meet, strangers you want to get to know a little better, and a great spot for crowd watching. When you meet new people, you may suggest to them that they join you for a coffee/drink at this meeting place at the end of the session. Often people wander around aimlessly wishing they had the opportunity to connect with others during the down time/free time at the conference. Basically, act as if you are the host and not the guest!

Attend as many of the social events for the conference as possible. Some of the best contacts you will make may happen in the relaxed atmosphere of a cocktail party or barbeque.

At conference meal times aim to sit with a different group at each sitting, and preferably people you don't know. Avoid sitting with people from your own organisation at the meal times and during the sessions. Catch up for a 10 minute debrief at the end of the day (you have plenty of time to see them back at the office).

Completely s...t...r...e...t...c...h your comfort zone.

Always remember to have as much fun as possible; and ALWAYS follow up the people you meet. Good networking is all about connecting and creating relationships: the follow-up will nurture and sustain the relationship!

Tips for Successful Business Networking
Business Networking accounts for over 85% of business in the market place today. Networking is a word that is now widely and commonly used in most business environments. The big question though is this: how do you know if you are networking effectively? Networking is actually a life skill, not just something we do if we want something from someone. There are two main keys to successful networking: 1. Give freely. Remember these two principles: Give is Gain! and Givers Gain! Do things for...

10 Secrets to Successful Business Networking
Most CBD's have an abundance of networking breakfasts, lunches, dinners, seminars, and workshops you can attend. Your budget will usually determine how many of these you can afford to attend, and without any doubt whatsoever, your attitude will determine the outcomes in attending these functions. Far too many people arrive at these events stressed, angry, basically not wanting to be there. They are not doing themselves any favours by being there, because all they will attract is negative...

7 Keys to Business Networking Growth
Referral networking in business is not going away. No matter how high-tech, plugged in, or globalized the world becomes, networking will be around forever. You need networking, and you need it to work for you. But as consumers, clients, customers, and executives all realize the power and usefulness of networking you are faced with the difficulty of discriminating how, when, why, and how much networking you should be doing. For example, if you joined every networking web site there was, you...

You Can BE an Effective Networker Even If You re Shy
The most often misguided perception of networking is you need to be outgoing and a real talker, to be good at networking and meeting potential referral partners. However this isn't the case, because normally the person who is shy (yet very good at what they do) are often the ones who benefit the most from referral marketing and are normally not in sales or outgoing work. You'd be very surprised at how many people are actually introverted and yet developed a system to depend on direct sales...

Creative Ways to Network for Busy Entrepreneurs
With all the demands on our time made by our business, professional and personal lives, it is tempting to assign a lower priority to networking as an activity designed to meet new people. After all, we have so many commitments at the office and at home -- to colleagues, family and friends - that it is difficult to set aside extra time to bring even more people into our lives. This thinking would be wrong, however, on two levels. For one, we are constantly being introduced to new people anyway,...

There is Huge Potential Lurking Withing Business
There is massive potential to be found in nurturing the synergy which is found within a Business Networking Referral Community. Like most of us, you've probably had at least one bad experience with a supplier of goods or services in the past! One of our main goals is to put you in touch with trusted suppliers of goods and services who have been recommended by other business owners who have had a pleasant experience with them, and they are also meant to be people who are prepared to put that...

The Foundation of Good Business Networking
Quite a large percentage of people out there have an almost overwhelming fear of talking to strangers. This fear however, is generally totally unfounded, and if challenged head-on can be converted into a passion. Quite a few people arrive at a networking function feeling a little nervous, because they don't know many of the people attending. This often causes them to leave their confidence and their authenticity at the front door, just prior to taking that huge step into the venue. They are...

Network Marketing Strategy Story Telling
Most of us have heard before about the value of telling stories. The reason it's such a powerful network marketing strategy is that it's not perceived as a sales technique. You're just telling a story. And if you'll remember to gather just a handful of stories that bring home certain points about your products or your opportunity, then you can talk to anybody with confidence. Why? Because you're not selling. You're just telling a story. You MUST have stories about your products or services....

How to Support Members in Your Personal Network
Rule No.1: The most important part of every business is PEOPLE; and the second most important part of every business is PEOPLE. Not the product or service being offered .... but People.
