How To Identify Professionals Who Remove Asbestos Safely

Asbestos was a popular construction material before the nineties since it is a good insulator and it is fire resistant. It is however no longer used because once it gets damaged it poses a great risk to your health. Asbestos which is damaged releases fibers which can be inhaled and which can lead to the development of cancerous diseases.

If you live or work in a building that was built before the nineties, then you should find out whether the building contains asbestos. You should then get an asbestos removal company to safely get rid of the asbestos from the building.

Different Forms Of Asbestos

Asbestos products are normally found in two different forms - either friable or non-friable asbestos. Non-friable asbestos has its asbestos fibers bonded with another material such as cement or resin. In case non-friable asbestos gets damaged, it may release a small amount of asbestos fibers but if left undisturbed it does not pose a health risk.

Friable asbestos on the other hand refers to asbestos that can easily be crushed into dust by hand. It easily releases asbestos fibers into the air even when slightly disturbed. This means that friable asbestos poses a great risk to health and should only be removed by a licensed asbestos professional.

Asbestos Removal

In case you have asbestos in your building and you need a professional company to get rid of it, you can use a professional that either has a Class A or a Class B license. An asbestos removal company that has a Class A license is allowed to remove any quantity of friable asbestos or any quantity of non-friable asbestos containing material. An asbestos professional with a Class B license is only allowed to remove non-friable asbestos of any quantity.

You can also get a person that is not licensed to remove the asbestos as long as it is non-friable and it is less than ten meters squared. If the non-friable asbestos is more than ten meters squared, then you need to get a person that has a Class B license to get rid of it.

Training Of Workers

It is a requirement that there should be a supervisor present when asbestos removal is taking place. The supervisor should have the appropriate certification depending on the type and quantity of asbestos being removed. The people working under the supervisor must also have the relevant training required to carry out the removal work they are involved in.

The workers should have a certificate which shows that they have completed the required units needed to carry out either Class A or Class B removal work. Workers need to go through Class B removal training before they can be trained on Class A removal.

How Asbestos Removal Is Done

Before any licensed removal of asbestos can take place, the person carrying out the removal needs to notify the person who requested for the removal. The person will be informed about the date when the work will start and how the work will be done.

Other people who need to be notified of the planned work are those who occupy the building and owners of the building. Immediate neighbors should also be informed about the work. The local regulator also has to be informed in writing about the planned work.
