When Is A Noise Maker Used

?

A horn vuvuzela, also known by the term lepata Mambu, is a 2-feet-meter long plastic horn that produces a loud monotone sound. The horn vuvuzela is traditionally used to summon villagers from afar to attend the gatherings of the community. Nowadays, these horns are frequently being used in football matches in South Africa to cheer and celebrate the favourite team's good performance and also because these horns have become the South African symbol.

However, there had been some issues with this instrument as some controversies arise when used by spectators in football matches. Due to its high sound pressure level, it may cause someone to suffer from a permanent hearing loss. What's more saddening is the fact that the horn vuvuzela is being proposed by FIFA, the world association football governing body, to be banned from stadiums as they see it as a threat and possibility to become a weapon for hooligans. They are afraid that they may use it in ambush marketing, resulting to injuries in football games.

In 2010, a study that was made by Dr Ruth McNerney and her colleagues of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine revealed that there was a possibility that these horns could possibly spread disease. They found out that at the bottom of the vuvuzela revealed tiny droplets of what seemed like a carrier of flu and cold germs. Because of these news and research studies, most shopping centers in South Africa have already banned the usage and selling of these vuvuzela. In some part of the US, vuvuzela has also been banned due to the health risks that these horns can bring to everyone. Although there are people protesting against the banning of these horns, law makers are firm in their decisions to ban the usage of vuvuzelas.

For a regular citizen like you, what are your thoughts in terms of the banning of the horn vuvuzela? Do you agree that it brings a lot of health hazards to everyone? If you were to decide and make a stand regarding these horns, which side would you take? Would you prefer to ban these instruments forever? Or would you like them to remain in the culture of every one especially in South Africa? Whatever side you choose, bear in mind that your small decision to take part in either side will reflect what you want your environment to be like. If you come up with a decision, stand up and take a step and let the world hear your voice.
