Ten Qualities Of A Good Leader

Leadership can be defined as one's ability to get others to follow. There are many reasons that great leaders exist and every organisation, team, group needs good leaders. A good leader must have certain qualities that allow them to inspire others to listen and follow. Here are my top ten Leadership requirements:

1. Integrity

A leader has to have integrity. A leader must have a consistent set of actions, values, measures and principles. With good leaders you need to always know what you are going to get in terms of honesty and reliability. When you follow someone you need to know that they are honest and trustworthy.

2. Dedication

A leader inspires others by example and needs to be focused on the tasks that need to be achieved. A great leader will inspire followers to be part of the team and inspire them to create something unique as opposed to just working a job!

3. Leaders Have A Vision

Leaders need to understand exactly what they are trying to achieve. They need to be able to see a path forward in completing tasks, projects or achieving goals. They also need to be able to communicate that vision in a way that all members of their team understand.

4. Leaders Need To Have Passion

By demonstrating passion, leaders will inspire passion within their team and followers. A leader needs to feel passionate about what they are doing so that their followers can see and feel that passion. If a leader has no passion for what they are doing they will not inspire anyone else. Great leaders of the past have all had great passion - it's what drives many leaders.

5. Leaders Have To Be Good Decision Makers

The success of many leaders is down to the good decisions that they make. A leader who makes good decisions will have the backing of his team and followers. It also goes without saying that a leader that makes good decisions is more likely to succeed than not.

6. A Good Leader Builds A Good Team

A good leader knows that he cannot do everything himself and builds a good team that is trustworthy and one that they can rely on. A good leader does not micro-manage the team but is always available when questions need to be asked.

7. A Leader Needs Character

Character strengths and limitations play a critical role in any leadership style. A great leader will know what their strengths are and will make sure they play to those strengths.

8. A Leader Is Always Calm

Good leaders are tolerant remain calm, composed and steady. Storms, emotions, and crises come and go and a good leader takes these as part of the journey and keeps calm.

9. A good leader is committed to excellence.

Second best does not lead to success. The good leader not only maintains high standards, but also is proactive in raising the bar in order to achieve excellence in all areas

10. A Good Leader is Confident.

In order to lead and show direction a leader must be confident as a person and in the leadership role. A leader is a person who inspires confidence in others and draws out the trust and best efforts of the team to complete the task well. A leader who conveys confidence towards the proposed objective inspires the best effort from team members.
