Four Extremely Important Flood Prevention Tips

Copyright (c) 2013 Floodsense

One thing that can wreak havoc on a person's home is a sudden influx of water that floods a house. It can destroy belongings and ruin a home's resale value. Even worse, it can have an adverse effect on the livelihoods of family members. This is why planning ahead is extremely important. Below are several flood prevention tips that can help.

1. Make Sure Your Home Has the Correct Drainage

It's a simple concept based on physics. If water does not have anywhere to drain, it will instead build up and flood. This is why making sure that certain parts of your home have the drainage needed to prevent flooding is very important. Part of this is simple home maintenance. Make sure all the drains in your home are working properly and unclogged. You should also routinely clean your gutters and install guards over them to prevent future clogs from forming.

2. Make Sure Your Pipes Are Winterized

Flooding in homes doesn't only occur during tremendous downpours. It can also occur because of simple cold winter weather as well. If a pipe freezes, it can burst. This will cause flooding in your home. To stop this from happening, you must winterize the pipes in your house. This should be done by properly insulating those water pipes. In certain other cases, the heat may need to be switched on in your home. While heating bills can certainly be expensive, paying for a burst frozen pipe will be far more expensive and much more of a headache.

3. Check the Forecast and Prepare

If you live in a flood plain or other area prone to flooding, you should also make sure to always know the forecast well ahead of time. Even if you live in an area that rarely gets a torrential downpour, you could someday receive one. If a bad storm is approaching your way, you must prepare ahead of time to protect your home and belongings. One simple thing you can do is move your more valuable possessions to the highest level in your home. You should also remove and roll up rugs and place everything you can in air tight storage above ground level.

4. Check for Leaks in Your Home

Lastly, another common cause of water damage in many homes is unattended leaks. Often, indoor flooding is caused by leaks that are left to worsen over time. Check all of the water based appliances and fixtures in your home for leaks to improve your home's flood prevention. This should include faucets, toilets, dishwashers, shower heads and all plumbing. This will prevent them from causing flooding inside your home in the future. It is also one good way to save on your water bill.
