The Alignment Processes Of Machinery

It doesn't matter how large, small, complex or simple your machinery is, ensuring it runs in alignment is essential.

The word alignment sounds as if it only perhaps refers to components such as shafts. To some extent this is of course the case, but there are many other component parts of a machine that need to be aligned with other such as belts, bearings and shims.

Before looking at some of the other items that need alignment the most obvious area relates to the horizontal and vertical planes that any machine needs to operate in. Machine manufacturers build their machines to operate within certain tolerances. They may be made to operate vertically, horizontally, or in other more obtuse angles. These factors are taken into account by the machine manufacturers to ensure equal wear on components parts.

For example, the parts exposed to increased wear are very different for a machine designed to operate in the vertical plane to one designed to operate horizontally. Just one consideration is the natural gravitational effect on the machine. If a shaft goes out of alignment and isn't rectified quickly, then other component parts will wear excessively. Alignment tools can pinpoint where the misalignment has occurred so that remedial action can take place. Monitoring alignment regularly enables machine operators to know when something is going wrong, before there are any noticeable signs, such as vibration, which is a sure sign misalignment has occurred.

Belts are used in machinery to link one moving part to another. Worn belts or misaligned gearing between the belt drives means excessive wear occurs. The first noticeable sign is usually increased noise followed by increased vibration. At this stage, bearings and seals are likely to be under increased stress. The torque of the belt may be unequal across its width and the belt will ultimately fail, resulting in machine shutdown. This increases costs, due to replacement parts, extra maintenance costs and of course the actual downtime. Using machine alignment tools to regularly monitor belt alignment will ensure you can replace belts at a convenient time, but more importantly, the belts will last longer and so will the components parts which help to keep costs down to a minimum.

Not all alignment processes involve the mechanical moving parts of the machine. Equally important to any machines longevity is ensuring the machine is accurately geometrically positioned. This is where shims are essential. Shims relate to thin metal plates, usually made from steel or brass and are made to exacting tolerances. The metal shims are placed under the machines feet, or other similar place, to ensure with absolute accuracy that the machines central shaft rotates along a precise centerline. This ensures wear to other machine parts are kept to a minimum. The drive shafts in any machine are a central component and must operate in the correct plane. It only needs a machine to be a degree or so out of alignment for the shaft to start putting extra pressure on bearing and seals.

The Basics Of Shaft Alignment And Why It Matters
Coordinating all the moving parts of your business means more than just ensuring your people and your products are on target. If you work in a manufacturing environment, it's also important that the moving parts within the machinery are operating as they should. That's why it's critical that you have the proper tools and knowledge to align the shafts within machines, avoiding excessive wear and tear and keeping your business moving. What is Shaft Alignment? All machinery has several...

The Science of Engineering Alignment
A dictionary definition of alignment says that it is the positioning and orientation of more than component part, so that those parts perform together accurately. As far as engineering is concerned, alignment refers to the various parts of a machine, such as motor shafts or belt drives, operating in synchronization along a balanced central axis. In general, vibration from a machine indicates that one or more parts are out of alignment. Once vibration occurs the misalignment will get worse,...

Multiple Alignments on Various Machinery
Many machines operate together. Examples include interlinking gearboxes, coupled shafts and pulley belts. Whenever more than one rotating mechanism is connected to another rotating device, they need to be aligned. In other words the center lines must correspond to each to allow for smooth transition of power. Any slight misalignment between the two rotating devices puts strain on various parts of the components. Initial there is increased vibration, a sure sign something is misaligned....

The Principles of Shaft Alignment
The term shaft alignment can refer to engineering the alignment of shafts in a coupling. During shaft aligning two or more machines or machine parts are positioned so that the rotational axes of the associated shafts are as accurate as possible in alignment. An absolutely perfect alignment is impossible in practice. The inevitable effects of angular and parallel misalignments can be partially absorbed by couplings, but this increases their wear. The best possible shaft alignment reduces load...

Top Questions About Orthopedics And What Bone Doctors Do To Help Patients
The term 'Orthopaedics' or 'Orthopedics' refers to a surgical branch of medicine as used by specialized physicians who are called orthopedic surgeons, in order to treat or adjust a vast assortment of ailments that might affect a person's bones, spine, ligaments, tendons, and muscles, that is, musculoskeletal system. The word orthopedics was first invented in the early 1740s by a physician from France, Nicolas Andry. He took a pair of Greek terms translating as Straight and child. Andry...

Post Cards And Your Shipments
We believe that you should never stop selling, even after you've just drained the wallets of your customers! Surely there must be something else they might want to get from your company. The point is simply that you never can tell how much your customer really needs until you make sure she has had every opportunity to buy. One principle that many marketers fail to capitalize on is that people are creatures of habit, and once you have established a bond of trust with them they will keep coming...

Choosing The Best Fence
A fence is an extension of your home; not only does it show your boundaries which define your personal space, if you choose the best fence for your home, it complements it and therefore adds value. No doubt you have looked at many fences that people have; some tend to blend in perfectly, others really don't look good. For example, if you have a home with wooden panelled sidings then a wooden picket style fence will probably look great. However choose a chain linked fence and it may not fit...

Is A Clean Diesel Car Right For You
? When most people think about diesel engines, they usually think about large trucks that are loud, smelly, and have dark smoke billowing out of the exhaust pipe. Well, all of that has changed with the introduction of clean diesel. Although there are some recognized advantages of diesel cars and trucks, they have been more than counteracted by the knowledge that their fumes are hazardous to people and to the environment. That is the biggest difference between old diesel cars and new diesel...

What to Look for With Osteoporosis and How to Treat It
In the period of growth, a vital and positive influence on bone mass and physical activity is sufficient intake of calcium (at least 1000 mg daily). Lack of exercise, limited calcium intake, chronic inflammatory processes and administration of certain medicines on the contrary lead to a small increase in bone mass and cause one to achieve a low peak bone mass. The skeleton is at peak bone density between 25 to 30 years. Around the 30th year, there is a negative bone balance, often resulting...
