5 Critical Questions You Should Ask Before Launching an Online Marketing Campaign





Starting an online marketing campaign is very exciting, but it is also very confusing. First off, the language and definitions is very niche specific. Secondly, there are many technical tactics and processes that are specific to this industry. Also, there is a lot of conflicting information out there; who do you trust? Lastly, it is hard to understand what you are getting as a buyer. Don't worry…in this article I will give you some practical information you can use in your online marketing efforts.

Question 1 - What is my conversion goal?

In short, a website should only do one of two things: sell online or create a lead. Online marketing is one of the few types of marketing that is performance based. So you must go into the campaign having a clear understanding of your conversion goal.

Question 2 - What is the current state of my website?

When you sit down with a Online Marketing consultant or internet marketer, you should ask the following questions about your website. How much traffic does my site get? And what are the keywords that I rank for? You need to see how the search engines are currently looking at your properties in order to understand your baseline.

Question 3 - Does my website support my conversion goal?

Your website design should 100% your conversion goal. For example, if your goal is convert a lead, then you website should have copy or video above the fold that directs the reader to opt-in to get some type of juicy content or to enter a contest. If your website doesn't support this, then you should be prepared to redesign the site or create new landing pages to support on your online marketing efforts.

Question 4 - What is the addressable market for my business?

A thorough analysis of the addressable market will need to be done to determine your online marketing strategy. You should look at the total traffic for your niche, the competitors in keywords and the respective keywords they rank for, and the cost and competition for those same keywords in Google AdWords. We use the Google Keyword Tool and several other analytics tools to look at site rankings, organic traffic opportunities, competitors in organic search, and opportunities in Google AdWords.

Question 5 - Does Social Media represent a reasonable traffic source?

There is no question that social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn represent a good source of traffic. The question is whether that traffic will convert into buying customers. In my opinion, consumer brands and B2C businesses tend to do better on Facebook, while B2B business are better suited for LinkedIn. Please remember, just because the traffic source is social media it still must work with you conversion goal.

If you address these 5 questions before you start your online marketing efforts, you will be 95% ahead of most of your competitors. The answers from these questions will allow you craft a focused plan of attack for driving traffic, converting sales, and creating a strong ROI on your online marketing efforts.
