Human resources have been seen as one of the most important resources on earth. For, without the information, knowledge and wisdom accumulated by humans over centuries, the natural resources would not be perceived and utilised as resources and civilisation would not have evolved as it has. The volumes focus on the importance of human resources, covering aspects of human resources availability and use, problems in development of human resources and challenges to overcome in with specific reference to India. The articles reproduced from different journals published in India and abroad deal with theories, models and principles underlying human resource development. They focus on issues relating to population and sustainable management for resources and regional dimensions of human resource development. They study aspects relating to Census mapping, demographic data for decentralised planning, population stabilisation, population and disasters, migration and urban and regional planning, women’s health, mortality and rural society. They link population growth to food security, environment and delve into education, rural labour resources, social differentiation of tribal population in transition among other themes. Referring to various developments and giving relevant data to support the text, the articles stress on inter-disciplinary research on population and other issues that confront the Indian society today, the need for gender equity, equality and justice, and the importance of action programmes to improve the social concerns relating to population, education and employment. The volumes would benefit readers and researchers of geography as well as those of other social science disciplines. The editors of the volume are distinguished geographers of India.

Hampi the splendour that was M S Krishna Murthy R Gopal
Located on the Tungabhadra river, about 120 km west of Bellary in Karnataka, south India, Hampi: earlier called Vijayanagara, was founded in 1336 AD. From 1336 to 1565, the site served as the capital of Vijayanagara Empire: perhaps the most glorious Hindu kingdom, which was founded in the wake of Muslim invasions of peninsular India. As the seat of a military state that dominated the whole of South India, barring the Kerala coast, Vijayanagara: ‘the City of Victory’, was built up by its rulers...

India in the world of physics then and now edited by Asoke N Mitra
None can possibly question the remarkable Indian contributions of the pre-independence era – through the seminal researches of home-grown stalwarts, like S. Ramanujan, J.C. Bose, C.V. Raman, Meghnad Saha, and S. Chandrasekhar. And their contributions to the development of modern physics are very well documented. This book, accordingly, presents a cross-section of Indian contributions to physical theory since independence – the contributions that have had a distinct global impact. It is an...

Both he and his father, Hyder Ali are notable in Indian history for their resolute resistance against the rising power of the British in India. Srirangapatna today is renowned for the seemingly impregnable fort of Tipu Sultan. And is about 15 km...

Mint road milestones RBI at 75 editors Bazil Shaikh Ranjeeta Dubey S M Khot
It is not the history of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), but a retrospective, a chronicle of events as they happened since its inception in 1935. An effort to relive the past, the book is written with a sense of nostalgia. And with a bit of pride as well. As the central bank of the country, RBI performs not only traditional banking functions, like monetary and currency managements -- serving as a banker to the government and as a banker to banks, but also has played a pioneering role in diverse...
