Road names in Great Britain go back hundreds of years, and, for almost as long as people have lived in cities and roads, there have been signs with road names on them. After all, where would famous places, from Albert Square to Coronation Street to Pudding Lane, from Wall Street to Saville Row, be without their iconic street signage?
So street signage is a bigger part of the UK's history and our culture, than you could have been thinking.
(You may not have known, for example, that during the Second World War they were taken down under the threat of an invasion?)
And they can do much more than simply show the visitor where they are - street signs can actively improve an area's unique atmosphere.
Road signage in the United Kingdom broadly comply with European standards, although some are specific to this country. Signs are governed by a set of detailed and complex guidlines, and designed using specialist computer software.
Street name signs, on the other hand, are not legally considered as traffic signs. This means that parish councils and other bodies responsible for them have an enormous amount of flexibility in where they are placed, and how they are designed.
Street signage can be fixed to a lamp column, building or wall.
As a convention, the typeface Transport is usually used on street name signage. That mixed-case typeface is utilised on all remaining permanent fixed road signage except route numbers on motorway signs.
There are two versions of this: Transport Medium (for light words on dark backgrounds) and Transport Heavy (for light backgrounds and darker text).
At the same time, it is also quite usual to see street nameplates with the serif font created by Britains David Kindersley.
Of course, the great thing about having a custom-made street sign for your avenue is that you could have far more control over the whole process. And it's only by customising yours that you can really have it looking exactly the way you would like it. You will want to consider keeping your hand-made signage sympathetic with your local area.
A terrace of beautiful village houses, for example, should be signed differently to a road near a busy town or city centre. Equally, if you're in Wales, you may want to consider having your street names in both English and Welsh.
Look for a custom maker with a vast experience, and ask to see customer testimonials and samples of previous work.
And find out how the maker guarantees the quality of its products. What will they do if you are unhappy with the project they make? Ask about the equipment they work with - will they use the latest digital technology to create the ideal street signage?
Lastly, your budget must be one of your considerations. But you could be pleasantly surprised to discover just how affordable handmade street signs could be.
You will be able to learn more about street signs, and start finding custom sign makers, online.
