How Invisalign Works

If are interested in talking to a orthodontist about getting Invisalign, you may be wondering how exactly the technology works. Being that the Invisalign device is essentially a small piece of plastic, it can be mind-boggling to think that this flimsy apparatus can really have the power to drastically transform your smile. Here’s a little behind the scenes look into how exactly the Invisalign technology can give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of. First off, Invisalign works a lot like regular braces, except it is a lot more comfortable to wear, and of course, practically invisible. When you first begin the invisalign process, your orthodontist will take an impression of your teeth. After that, a series of aligners will be created, each made to gradually make changes in the position of your teeth. Depending on your orthodontist’s recommendations, you will switch out the aligners every few weeks or so to adjust your teeth to the new, straighter position. Essentially, Invisalign is a systematic method of teeth straightening, by intervals of changed positions. It is uniquely customized for you and you only. Never before has there been orthodontic technology so custom fit to the patient.

As your teeth move and shift to the new positions set forth by your Invisalign, you will periodically go in to the orthodontist and get a check up on your progress. Though the dentist will have already charted out the course of your new smile by making the aligners, the checkups will allow him or her to gauge your progress and make any adjustments to the system.

The real difference between Invisalign and NY braces is two-fold. The main difference is the look and feel of the Invisalign device in comparison to the traditional braces. Without the metal or ceramic brackets, they are smoother and more comfortable for the wearer. You will still probably experience some discomfort when your jaw and teeth are moving, but nothing in regards to the device rubbing or cutting into your mouth. Aesthetically, Invisalign is often a more appealing choice. In addition to being discrete and clear, they are completely removable, so you can easily, floss, brush, rinse, and do whatever you do to keep your oral hygiene up to par. Also, with metal braces, you have to really watch what kinds of food you eat. Hard or over-sticky foods can damage brackets and wires, so many wearers have to avoid them completely. Even with clear braces, you have to avoid certain colored foods, as they can stain the brackets and are clear no longer. With Invisalign, you can eat the same foods you always have.
