Can I Save Money with a Renewable Energy System

? People across the United States are finding that installing a photovoltaic solar system can generate surplus electricity. The best customer for your renewable energy system, next to your own household, is your public utility company. But first, let's discuss renewable energy.

By definition, the source of an energy supply determines whether it is considered renewable energy. Wind, rain, ocean tides, and sunlight are common sources of renewable energy. Earth-stored heat, termed geothermal power, and biomass, a moniker for any biological material, are other energy sources that are also considered renewable, along with hydroelectricity, which is produced by moving water.

Home solar panels, also known as photovoltaic panels, convert sunbeams into electricity, and have proven themselves as credible sources of energy for homes across America as well as in other parts of the world. PV solar panels are made from cells containing simple electrical circuits. Semiconductor wafers are manufactured with negative and positive energy fields on opposing sides. Placing electrical conductors on both wafer sides forms a circuit. Rays from the sun strike the surface of the wafer, releasing electrons from the atoms of light, which are now renamed photo-electrons. This completes the current, thus creating usable electricity.

To sell electricity back to the local power company, a policy known as net metering must be in place. Net metering measures how much power a home or business produces compared to how much it uses. When they are equal amounts, the cost to the customer is zero dollars. Any extra power produced is sold back to the electricity company at a profit.

Simply put, when the sunlight is shining brightly during the day, PV systems convert it into free electricity. If the day is especially cloudy or energy needs of the home or building are high, the power company supplies whatever more is needed from the utility grid. However, if the business or home is producing more energy than it needs, the extra electricity is directed back to the grid, spinning the meter in a reverse direction. Special meters must be installed to accommodate this arrangement.

The utility company keeps an accounting of what is provided and what is received, reconciling the account at the end of each billing cycle. If the consumer has produced more than it has used, the electricity is sold back to the power company. It is necessary to ensure that the utility company has a buy-sell agreement and policy in place. A photovoltaic solar system installer may be able to negotiate the agreement and handle the paperwork as well.

Having your own renewable energy company in the form of a photovoltaic solar system can bring unique satisfaction to both homeowners and businesses. If your goal is simple living and leaving a small footprint on the planet, give it a try.

In order to do that it is crucial that individuals make a conscious effort to reduce their carbon footprints. There are big ways like installing a renewable energy system in your home or office, or eliminating bottled water from your grocery list. Shrinking your carbon...

Can PV Systems Really Give Us Free Energy
? A photovoltaic solar system, which is composed of PV solar panels, features technology that allows people and businesses to convert energy from the sun into usable electricity. PV systems achieve this effect through individual photovoltaic cells, and they can reduce your electricity bill by routing free energy to the electrical service panel in your home or business. It's true that you will have to spend some money to install your renewable energy system, but much of this will be offset by...

Kitchen Appliances May Be Key to Energy Cost
Despite appliance efficiency going steadily higher, it seems that consumers are simply using way more appliances then in the past, making the demand for energy rise higher than ever before. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) stated in a recent report that the United States had 76.6 million occupied houses in 1978. However, by 2005, that number had increased by 45 percent to 111 million. What this means is that more houses will cause the operation of more appliances. During that...

Green Hosting and Loading Times
Waiting for a website to load can sometimes seem interminably long to those of us who require instant gratification in this technological age. We get especially frustrated and aggravated when a website takes more than a few seconds to load up. It might not be the website's fault. It's actually just the load time of the host that is what slows everything down. You might think that you need a reliable web hosting provider to have a functional and decent website, and you're correct, but if you...

Why a Home Automation System is the Ultimate Home Improvement
The purpose of technology is to improve our current way of life. Furthermore, there is no better example of technology working to streamline life’s activities than a home automation system. Whether it’s automating something simple like the lamps in your living room, or something more complex like integrating your home’s fans, light fixtures and blinds to turn on in one clean sweep, home automation is undoubtedly convenient. But besides the obvious benefit of convenience, a home automation...

How Energy Star Appliances Came to Be
When you think about Energy Star appliances, you think about that logo you see on washers, dryers, fridges, and other items to let you know they conserve energy and are good for the planet. You probably don't think much about how Energy Star started or where it came from. But it's actually a pretty interesting history. Energy Star appliances, first of all, are just appliances that are given the approval of the program. They aren't their own brand. You may find Maytag appliances with the logo,...

ESCO s Are Helping the American Economy Bounce Back
Retailers have been struggling in the past five years to make themselves more efficient. With rising costs of owning a business, accompanied by the failing economy, business owners are trying creative ways to spend as little money as possible. But as more retailers are opting for the easier route and simply letting employees go, the economy itself would not be able to sustain this form of money saving. As millions of people are being fired, the businesses strength is actually diminishing,...

Researching an ESCO Before The Summer Energy Price Hike
I am dreading that inevitable increase in summer energy cost. With the weather remaining mercifully (if for some, frustratingly) cool it may be too soon to worry. Each and every year the uptick in energy cost in the warm months is a concern for everyone around the country. Going without that air conditioner would help but that sounds like torture, especially come the dog days of August. Self denial is not ever going to be my preferred option so this year I intend to do some serious price...
