Ergonomics in the Office Workstations

While staff tasks may vary, they will undoubtedly come into contact with a computer while working in an office. To have an ergonomically sound computer station, ask team members to follow these tips:

* Familiarise yourself with all adjustments on your chair and check all mechanisms are working properly
* Adjust the back support so it sits at a 90-100 degree angle to the base of the seat
* Adjust your body so that your:
o shoulder are relaxed but not slouching
o elbows are sitting higher than your wrists and are sitting away from your body
o thighs are not touching the under-side of the desk
o feet are flat on the floor or on footrest (you should not be able to swing them)
o Remove chair arms or make them low enough to fit under the desk
o Your desk height should sit between 690mm and 720mm
o Ensure your computer screen is arms length away and the screen is not tilted
o Adjust the contrast, font size and brightness of your computer screen to a comfortable level
o Keep your screen away from glare or reflections
o Keep your keyboard at a comfortable distance, based on your experience in typing (experienced typists will keep it closer to the edge of the desk, while users with less experience will have it further away from the edge of the desk)
o Take short breaks of 5-10 seconds when typing for extended periods
o Position your mouse close to the keyboard and make sure the mouse pad is laying flat and in good condition

If you are able to follow these simple steps when setting up a workstation for your staff, they will not only be safe and healthy, but also far more productive. If a staff member does complain about any kind of pain that could be related to their working environment, always take it seriously and action as soon as possible.

It doesnt take much to ensure you and your staff are safe, but it can cost a lot if you are found to be negligent towards your staff by not actioning a complaint or providing them with the appropriate workstation equipment.
