Is Your Networking Group Right For You

If you have spent anytime networking as a business professional, chances are you have been asked to join a networking group. You know the kind, they meet once a week, everyone stands up and tells about what they do, and referrals are passed around, often on little slips of paper. Sometimes, these networking groups can be fantastic sources of new business. It might seem like your entire new business clients are derived directly from the members of your networking group. On the other hand, it might seem that the group you are in is an entire waste of time. How do you know if your networking group is right for you or if it is time to pull out?

First of all, going to your networking group meeting each week should not seem like a chore. If you are truly reaping benefit from it and you'll like the people who are involved you will look forward to the time you spend with them each and every week. If you find yourself looking for excuses to get out of meeting with them versus looking forward to being around them then you may be in the wrong networking group. As is the case with any group of people, personalities often clash. This can frequently be the case as it comes to networking groups as some people may want to take control of the meeting and dominate the conversations that take place. In addition, those business professionals who are a little less experienced may come to the table with less than valuable referrals and end up wasting member’s time rather than help support their success. The goal for you or anyone who is interested in benefiting from a networking group is to find one that you enjoy and is also profitable for your business.

Saying this is obviously a lot easier than doing this and it may take a bit of trial and error. You can tell when you click with a group of people fairly quickly but that may not always be a determining factor in whether or not the group will be profitable for your business. Take a look at the individuals involved in the group. Are they successful? Are they leaders in their own particular industries? Do they demonstrate a willingness to be helpful in supporting the success of your business? These are all fantastic questions when trying to determine if a particular networking group is the right one for you. It should not be work at all but instead flow as easily as the relationship between you and your best friend does. You should be around a group of people that make you feel good and in turn you want to help by looking for business that you can refer to them. You can bet that if you feel this way, others will feel the same about you. Don't be afraid to visit different networking groups until you find one that feels right for you. After all, it's your business and your livelihood that matters. No one should stick with a decision they made once they realize it was the wrong one.
