Basement Ventilation Your Options For Accessing Clean Air

More and more families are today spending more time at the basement. This long forgotten room is now considered a very important part of the home. This is because it is far less expensive to remodel the basement than building a new room. This additional space can be used as a family room, additional bedroom or a laundry area. The only problem with this room is that moisture easily seeps in from the ground through the floor and walls, making basement ventilation very crucial.

Importance Of Ventilation

The basement is positioned below the ground level. Due to this placement, moisture easily gets sucked into the room. When the cold moisture from the ground mixes with the warm air found in the basement, it condenses. This condensation ends up giving out a damp smell, and if it is not wiped out will enable the growth of mildew spores and mold. Some of these molds, like the black mold, can trigger an asthma attack and can also cause symptoms of flu and allergic reactions. It is therefore important to ensure you have appropriate basement ventilation to so that there is a continuous flow of clean, dry and fresh air.

Air Exchange System

One of the more efficient systems used for basement ventilation is the air exchange system. In this system, air from outside is pulled into the room, while the damp air from the room is expelled. This system allows air that is dry to flow within the basement; it dries the floor, wall surfaces, carpets and other materials in the room. The dry air ensures there is no growth of mold and mildew, and will keep away structural rot from your building.

Fans

Many mechanical ventilation systems normally use fans and vents that remove used air in the basement and then bring in fresh air from the outdoors. There are simple systems where fans can be placed on opposite windows, where one fan brings in fresh air while the other one gets rid of the used air. More complex systems may consist of an exhaust fan with a pipe for ventilation.

Choosing The Right Basement Ventilation

There are several factors that need to be considered before you settle on a basement ventilation system that will give you the best results. The system that will work best will depend on the materials that have been used to build the basement and the heating system in place. Any moisture problems also need to be considered, together with the number of rooms in the basement. The installation team will need to determine the best place to install the system in order to give you the best results.

Importance Of Basement Ventilation

Having a continuous flow of fresh air into your basement is very important for your health and comfort. Basement ventilation gets rid of any stale and damp smell that may be in the room. The clean fresh air ensures you do not get any allergic reactions or symptoms of influenza and other viruses. Energy efficient ventilation systems will also enable you to make savings on your energy bills.
