Rugs And Their Uses Through The Ages

Rugs have a long and very interesting history. Woven rugs dates back to about 500 years BC. Rugs are woven and weaving has been done for thousands of years. Most likely, the first weaving was done to create baskets using pliable grasses, sticks or other materials that were available. When rugs were first woven, the wool of sheep or goat were the likely sources. The rugs were used as floor coverings and as decoration. Rugs have been an important part of the history of interior design, however, they have been used for other things as well and Cleopatra showed considerable ingenuity to have that secret meeting with Julius Caesar when she allowed herself to be concealed inside a rolled up rug.

Home decor was a luxury that few could afford and most families were more worried about putting food on their tables than they were about making their homes look nice. As the industrial revolution kicked in, interior design became more available to ordinary people. They had more disposable income and this allowed them not only to feed and clothe their families but to decorate their homes as well. In most homes the floor was either stone or wood and would have felt cold, particularly in the winter. By placing rugs on the floor, this not only created the appearance of warmth but made the room look more homely and welcoming. Just imagine what it must have been like for those families who just laid their first rug, to feel the softness under their feet and also the warmth instead of a hard cold floor.

There were many different types of rug and if you look back at history you will find that monarchs, sultans and the wealthy had some very special rugs made for their homes or rather, their palaces. Some of the Persian sultans had rugs which had gold thread, precious stones and elaborate embroidery within the body of the rugs. These rugs were very much the status symbol of the time and the owner's loved to show them off at banquets and state occasions. Some of these rugs took years to create, such were the intricacies of the designs. Different weaves became associated with particular regions, for instance, Soumak was a particular weave found in the Middle East. However, with the advent of machine weaving during the industrial revolution, rugs and carpet were made more for practical reasons rather than just as decorations. Some of the most durable carpets were made in the English cities of Axminster and Kidderminster.

When you look back into history, many of the old styles have been consigned to the history books and museums. There are still hand made rugs available to buy and these tend to be made using old fashioned techniques. They are often imported from countries like Turkey where area rugs are made with traditional patterns and in a variety of colours. Each pattern has a meaning or a story attached to it. These rugs are generally made from wool on hessian backs and are hard wearing, so will stand up to the everyday rigours of daily family life.

Carpets A Bit Of History
Carpets have been in use since ancient times and were first used to give protection from the cold but were also as decorative items. They were also used as floor coverings but were also placed on seating and tables. Some were purely ornamental and were hung up on the walls, in a similar way in which we would now hang pictures. Of course in those bygone days, carpet was all hand woven and took a good deal of time to complete so only the rich could afford it. The ancient Egyptians had thousands...

Weddings have been a special time for thousands of years with ceremonies and celebrations being a huge part of the ritual. Special clothing has always been worn by the bride and groom for the occasion, however, white wedding gowns are a relatively recent tradition.
