What Is A Skilled Nursing Facility

Although the term "nursing home" is widely used it is often a misunderstood term. Nursing homes have been defined as being anything from rest homes to acute care hospitals. Neither of these definitions is accurate. Nursing homes aren't hospitals and they do not provide the type of care that a hospital offers. And a nursing home certainly isn't a rest home.

A nursing home is a residence that is designed primarily to meet the needs of people who are either convalescing from an illness or who need long-term nursing care because they have a mental or physical problem. The primary goal of these residences is to provide treatment and care that will maintain or restore the resident's highest level of mental, physical, and social well-being.

Nursing homes are also known as skilled nursing facilities. A SNF (Skilled Nursing Facility) provides around- the-clock nursing supervision. It is staffed by licensed or registered nurses.

Skilled nursing facilities are residences that usually care for people who are incapacitated or who need short-term or long-term care and help with a lot of the aspects of everyday living such as bathing, walking, eating, and dressing.

Typically, an SNF provides dietary, nursing, pharmacy, medical, and activity services. Many also offer rehabilitation services that will help a person to be able to return home after an illness, accident, stroke, injury, or orthopedic procedure.

Every state in the United States licenses and certifies the nursing homes within their borders. These homes are required to adhere to the acceptable practices for services and care that are stipulated during the licensing procedure.

State inspectors try to determine if the nursing homes are compliant with the state laws by visiting the residences at least once per year. However, this does not always happen.

There are between 1 million to 2 million reported cases of nursing home abuse every year. And there have been estimates that the reported cases represent anywhere from 7 percent to 33 percent of the actual number of nursing home abuse incidents that occur in our country.

Therefore, selecting a skilled and safe facility for a friend or loved one can be a very challenging task. To do it right you have to be prepared to spend a lot of time on information gathering in order to have the facts you need to make the best decision possible.

After all, the residence that you choose or recommend will potentially be your loved one's community and home - possibly for the rest of their life.
