Can I Put My Small Wind Powered Generator On My Roof Are You Joking

Can I Put My Small Wind Powered Generator On My Roof? Are You Joking?!

Should you put a small wind turbine on your roof?

It seems like this would be a simple way to harvest all that FREE energy blowing around, but - not so fast!

There is certainly wind up on your roof but the problem is, there might not be enough of it to make the kind of power you want.

There are several structural limitations that make your roof a bad place to mount your new wind turbine.

Here are the reasons why…

• Not enough wind and too much turbulence

Most wind energy experts recommend placing your wind turbine at least 30 feet ABOVE the tree line, in order to experience their maximum effectiveness. The reason for that is there is too much turbulence due to buildings and trees to make the wind sustainable enough to smoothly power your house.

While almost ANY wind can drive a turbine, it is best if that wind is of a relatively consistent speed and direction for wind turbine purposes.

• The cost

Wind mounted wind turbines can be very expensive for the amount of power they produce. For the same money you would pay for a small wind turbine mounted to your roof, you can buy a much larger unit that can be mounted on a tower and produce a lot more energy.

• Size matters

To be able to harvest much wind, the wind turbine needs to have some heft. Most weigh at least several hundred pounds and that much weight attached to the roof of your house will cause some unusual stresses when the wind blows hard or gusts.

• Neighbors may not like you anymore

There is no real reason for it other than small wind turbines have gotten a bad aesthetic reputation. They are not much of a fashion statement in most neighborhoods.

Many neighborhood associations closely control what can be mounted on a roof, so be careful about investing in any kind of wind device before you check that out carefully.

Philosophically, we Americans are "raised on the mythology of individual action"…"but not everyone can put a windmill in their backyard.", according to Paul Gipe, who has written several books on wind energy.

The truth may be though that the larger the windmill, the better the power generation potential. The larger windmills that power companies put in service are by far the most efficient.

However, as more people buy the small wind turbine, the faster prices will come down and even the smaller amount of wind that they can harvest will be worth the investment.

Wind Powered Generator 3 Reasons It Is Popular
The wind powered generator is a great way to make power for your home or for some appliance in your home. The 3 reasons it is such a popular device now are... The wind powered generator provides a cheap source of power for your home - Cheap is really not the best way to describe the power that you will receive from your home wind turbine device. Really a better description would be that the power will be free, at least for a certain portion of energy you make. While it is not that likely...

Vertical Wind Generator 3 Ways They Are Better Than Horizontal
With a world of innovation surrounding wind energy devices these days, the vertical wind generator may be the most important of all the new products. Although it has a few inherent problems, it has some advantages that make it more practical for the average homeowner. There are basically 2 kinds of wind turbines on the market now - the horizontal axis wind generator and the vertical wind generator. The basic engineering differences relate to orientation of the spinning shaft. The vertical...

Exactly How To Install A Wind Powered Generator At Your House
When you first are looking in to wind energy, you don't think about the complexity of how to install a wind turbine on your property, but that can be the most complicated and frustrating part of the project. These are the elements that need to be considered when you are planning an installation: Where exactly you will install your windmill? Figuring out where exactly you are going to put the turbine is a primary consideration. This is what you got to get right before you even begin to...

2 Reasons Why You Need A Vertical Axis Wind Generator
Getting a vertical axis wind generator will change your home budget for the better. All renewable energy devices once paid for, continue to supply free energy to whatever that you have them hooked up to. It has been estimated that over 50% of most people's home expenses relate to heating and cooling their homes. Therefore, anything you can do to cut that expense, will be felt very strongly in your back pocket. Unless somebody comes along and discovers a alternate power source that is...

Vertical Wind Powered Generator For Your Home 3 Major Reasons To Get One
If you live in an urban setting, you need to be looking at a vertical wind turbine for the home. With roofs being the primary real estate for power generation in cities, vertical-axis wind turbines offer the best solution. Vertical turbines are somewhat new to the home wind market but they hold a lot of promise. The fact that there is so much residential roof real estate that is available for these devices means they could conceivably create most of the electrical generation in this...

Vertical Wind Generator 2 Reasons Why Horizontals Are Better
The vertical wind generator is one of the best ways on the market right now for taking control of your energy future. However, there is an alternative to the vertical wind generator that can be considered alongside it. The horizontal axis wind generator is the best alternative to the vertical system we are discussing as our main point. The vertical unit of course spins in a perpendicular plane and the horizontal unit spins parallel to the Earth. Both of these devices have a role in the...

Rooftop Installed Wind Turbines and Roof Effect
If you are seriously considering installing roof mounted wind turbines, then you need to pay careful attention to where exactly on your roof you place the windmill. Although it may be your only real choice, your roof is in no way the optimal place to make energy. It is usually a lot better to install your generator higher up to take advantage of stronger winds. The rule of thumb is at least 30 feet above the level of the highest ground obstruction, (like trees or buildings). However,...

The Vertical Axis Wind Generator
The vertical axis wind generator will change the way power is produced around the world in the coming years. It may be a bitter pill to swallow, but our current fuel sources are finite and there is not a lot we can do about that other than to find another way to create our electricity. As we all know intuitively, the fuels that we burn now are diminishing rapidly. What was once thought to be limitless is now seeming extremely limited. These are the ways the vertical axis wind generator will...

Home Wind Generator First Step To Get One
It can be an overwhelming experience when people first think about getting a home wind generator. The science is completely new to most of us and like anything else that is new, we think we ought to be able to master it in a day or two. But, to get home wind turbines right you need to spend some time and effort on understanding what you are getting into and even analyzing whether or not you have any business buying such a thing in the first place. It is so seductive to just jump ahead...

Wind Energy Turbine For Home Use
If you are looking into a wind power generator for your home, there are things that you must seriously think about before you get started in earnest picking out a specific device. It is best to think about these issues upfront, before you think about specific devices you might purchase. Here are 3 considerations that it wise to think about before you begin your quest for a wind turbine: 1.
