Learning the ABCs is the foundation of language no matter what language you are speaking you need to understand the alphabet for that language. Children need to recognize the letters and the sounds and to put those into words. Being able to print, write and even type these characters on a keyboard is critical to the development of your child. Once your child understands the alphabet it opens up an entire world of learning and literacy and your child can begin to read.
When to Learn?
The alphabet can be taught at an early age even before primary school at home. There are many games, books, toys and other resources you can use to help your child learn the alphabet. Once the child can recognize a few letters then this can be formed into simple words like cat, dog, boy, or hat. It’s recommended that this learning takes place long before the child goes to elementary school. You can introduce them to letters even before they reach the age of three and even a few simple words. The sooner the child learns the alphabet the better it will be for them because this is such a critical part of the learning process for any child.
How to teach it
It doesn’t make sense to try and teach every letter right away and you shouldn’t do this. You want to have a gradual learning process for your child. Try to introduce a few letters and maybe a simple word or two after that. The child needs to see, experience, and hear how the letter sounds. Maybe they could try drawing it for you. There are games, coloring books and so on that are great learning tools for letters and the sounds of letters in the alphabet.
Make sure they understand the sounds and the order of the letters in the alphabet you could make up a song with the letters to teach it to them. Such as A is for apple, B is for boy and so on. Make sure you keep this very simple. You can buy books that can show you various ways of teaching the alphabet to young children. There are computes programs that you can use for teaching too as well as many Internet resources.
The alphabet is the cornerstone of knowledge so teach it to your children as soon as possible. They may not learn the whole thing right away but if they can pick up bits and pieces and begin to understand it then they will be ready when they hit primary school to learn at a faster rate. Make sure the learning is fun and encourage them to learn as well as rewarding your child when they do things well.
