Various Nursing Degrees Available to Students

For those who are interested into going into a career in nursing, there are several options available for you these days as there are several schools offering a variety of nursing degree programs. There are several people who are interested in this field and therefore several degree options available. The degree you work towards can all depend on the amount of time you have to dedicate as well as how much money you have available through your own money or financial aid.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

A certified nursing assistant certification is one of the fastest certifications to get in the field of nursing. You can complete this certification in a few short full days but this doesn't include the clinical portion of the certification. As a CNA you are going to be working under the supervision of a RN. You will follow their direction as far as their treatment plan and also anything the doctor may have to add into the care plan.

As a nursing assistant you are going to be caring for patients and doing things such as bathing them, taking vital signs, helping with getting dressed as well as other basic activities of daily living. This is the perfect stepping stool to get into the field of nursing. Many aides choose this option and continue on making nursing their career.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

The next level up from a CNA is a licensed practical nurse, or a LPN. This requires more educational requirements and you will go through a year program. There are also 2 year programs as well to teach more skills. LPN's are also going to give direction to CNA's as well. This program can be offered at community colleges as well as online schools. These nurses often work independently as opposed to CNA's which work in partner with nurses. They have more responsibility as opposed to CNA's and for those who are already certified as a nursing assistant, they can transition into being a LPN easily.

Registered Nurse (RN)

The next accelerated level from the LPN level is a Registered Nurse (RN). One of the most common degree levels in nursing is a RN. This degree takes more education and the course lasts about 4 years. This degree offers more flexibility as more facilities are offering positions that require a RN degree. An RN can do just about everything from administering medications as well as giving shots if needed. You will need an Associate's degree before working towards a RN degree. You can earn an Associate's degree at any community college or a vocational college. You can even now earn one online as many schools are offering online options. As a RN, you can expect to earn an average salary of $40,000.

Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Perhaps one of the longest and hardest nursing levels is a BSN which is a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. You will have to have 4 years education at a major university or a college. If you happen to already have a nursing degree whether it's a LPN or a RN license, you are going to be able to go from LPN to BSN or RN to BSN. You are going to be able to work in more facilities and specialty offices. This includes labor and delivery offices as well as other specialties.
