Becoming A Pediatric Nurse

Pediatric nursing has a lot of tasks that are somewhat similar to what you would do as a nurse. Pediatrics is going to work more with young children and young adults. These offices work with children until they are 16 years of age and deal with illnesses, immunizations, and more. In order to become a pediatric nurse, there are a few classes that you are going to have to take in order to get your license and be able to work in this type of field or specialty.

There are more requirements outside of needing to study, taking the certification test, and doing clinical hours. These are all going to be needed before you can begin working as a nurse in the field. You can find many different types of nursing programs available to help you get your nursing degree started.

Once you earn your degree you are going to be eligible to take the NCLEX test which will help you get one step closer to your nursing license. There are many diploma programs that are easily achieved in 2 years.

For those looking to cut down the money spent as well as the time spent on schooling to become a RN, you may want to consider earning your Associate Degree in Nursing. You are still going to be able to work in the field and you will still have a nursing license. However, if you are looking for top salary and more possibilities, a Bachelor degree in Science is the way to go. This may take more schooling, but while you are working at a hospital or other medical facility, you can go back to school to earn your BSN. You are going to be able to see what other options are there for you and to be able to expand on your skills and jobs.

Job Duties as a Pediatric Nurse

As a pediatric nurse, you are going to be working with young adults and children from 16 years of age and under. You will be administering medications and if you are working in an office, you will be helping with regular wellness routine check-ups. You will be taking blood samples, helping with urine samples and taking vital signs.

You additionally may at times assist with psychological impacts of patients that are diagnosed with certain illnesses or conditions. As a pediatric nurse, you should be compassionate and have strong communication skills as well. Additionally, you should be able to work in stressful situations and be able to handle it easily. The average salary for a pediatric nurse is anywhere from $38,623 - $66,825 and this can depend on how much schooling and experience you have.
