Article Marketing Strategy: Location, Location Location (Where You Write Counts!)

When you sit down to write your articles, it's likely your routine affects your productivity. Many people need that cup of coffee when they sit down, or put on a CD of writing music in order to shut out the rest of the world. But did you know the location while you write is a big factor in your success?

Whilst some people work better in a crowded office, others feel more at home in a coffee shop with Wifi access. Whatever your preference, your routine and location can be either conducive or detrimental to your writing efforts.

The place where we write is something that we can take for granted. Many of us just sit at our desks to write day after day, month after month. And if that works for you, great - but have you stopped to consider whether your location is helping or hindering your article marketing?

Many professional writers have a regular routine for writing. Famous horror author Stephen King, for example, writes at the same time of day, in the same location, listening to familiar music, sitting in the same chair, and with desk top papers arranged in the same way. Familiarity can be a great tool to help you get into a productive writing routine, so the question is: how do you find out what is the best place for you to write?

The answer is, experiment!

If you are used to always working in a quiet and isolated location, try putting yourself in a busy and populated area to write - pick up your notepad and head out from the office and into a streetside cafe or even a shopping centre. Watching the world pass by can act as inspiration for your articles, and for some, the bustle of everyday life is far more relaxing than complete silence. Challenge yourself to a change of scene to work out what works best for you.

Alternatively, if you are more used to writing in public, try carving out a little private nook where you can try writing in solitude and peace. This can also be something to try when you're struggling for ideas or suffering from writer's block.

Here are some ideas of different locations for writing.

1. The Library

Libraries are often equipped with free Wifi hotspots, and are a great place for enjoying some peace and quiet as you write. This is perfect if you like a little bit of movement but not a lot of noise, as the bustle of the library is quiet but constant, but the unfamiliarity keeps you on your toes. Give it a go!

2. A Cafe

Cafes are great places to write, as you can enjoy the background noise of a public place, but also be perked up by the smell of coffee! Try going at off-peak times, avoiding busy lunch and dinner periods. That way, you won't get distracted or seem a nuisance for taking up a table whilst other customers queue.

3. Sit Outside

If it's warm outside, why not take advantage of it? Sitting outside can be a great way to clear your mind and get some fresh air, and the quiet can be really conducive to your writing efforts. Try sitting in your local park with a pad of paper, or even taking a walk with a tape recorder. Remember, you don't always have to use your computer or laptop to write; sometimes, just jotting down or recording notes can be a great precursor to a full-blown writing stint, so if you're not up for a full writing session, this can be a good way to still be productive.

Where you write can easily influence what you write, how easily you manage to write, and how successful your writing is - so experiment, and see what works for you. Try changing your routine every once in a while to make sure you don't get bored. If you find something that works for you (say, working in a cafe), why not try out different coffee shops for a change of scene?
