Bad Drivers

There are many bad drivers on the roadways, but how do you avoid them? The answer is that you cannot avoid bad drivers. The only thing that you can do is be a better driver yourself. By being more vigilant on the roadways, you can save yourself the hassle and trouble of getting involved in accidents with other people who aren't paying attention.

When you are on the road, there are so many things to distract you from what you should actually be paying attention to: driving. For example, there are stoplights, other drivers, unexpected road hazards, bad weather, road construction and pedestrians. Earlier in the week, I was driving on the road to go to an appointment, and there was another driver in the lane beside me. The person was in their car on their cell phone having a conversation with another passenger in the car and texting all at the same time. If that is not dangerous, then I am not sure what is. There are many people who think that they can multi-task while driving. However, what most people fail to realize is that they shouldn't be multi-tasking while they are driving. In fact, the only thing that you should be doing while you are driving is paying attention to the things and circumstances surrounding you.

It only takes a fraction of a second to become involved in a vehicular accident. What does this translate to? Take, for instance, the amount of time it takes someone to glance down at their middle console to get something out or to even change a song on their cd player or change a radio station. In that amount of time, you could get into an accident if you suddenly encounter an animal crossing the street or a child running after a ball. Another part of the problem is that many drivers feel as if driving is their right and not their privilege. Imagine what the roadways would look like if everyone just drove the way that they wanted without due regard for the safety of other people. You would never want to get on the roads again.

Whenever you are driving on the road or are preparing to go for a drive somewhere, you need to be cognizant of other people around you. If you are not sure whether or not you should go out for a drive, pay attention to how your body feels. If you are tired, you are probably not in the best position to be driving because you are not going to be nearly as mentally alert as you should be. Being tired while driving is almost as dangerous (if not more so) than driving while intoxicated. Your reflexes are slowed down and your reaction time is greatly reduced, thereby increasing the chances that you will involve yourself in a motor vehicle accident with another driver or vehicle. Too many times when drivers are involved in accidents, they wonder what they could have possibly done to avoid being in the accident. There is nothing that they could have done to prevent the accident other than not be as distracted. Turn off the radio. Ask passengers to remain quiet while you are driving. Whatever you have to do to keep yourself focused while driving, this is what you have to do. Your safety and the safety of the other drivers around you is simply more important.

Other Drivers and Their Habits
I'm not one to brag, but I will take this opportunity to say that I think I am a good driver. Having been a police officer in the past, I have certainly grown accustomed to the bad driving habits which seem to habitually follow certain drivers around. However, I am here to say that although bad habits are difficult to break, it is not impossible. And nowhere else is this more important than when it comes to your safety on the roadways as well as the safety of other people (drivers and...

Angry Driving
When I first arrived into New York from North Carolina, or rather- even when I drove over the New Jersey border from Delaware, I knew that I was going to have to put on my “other” driving cap because I knew that the drivers were going to be much more aggressive than what I had grown accustomed to in North Carolina. Angry drivers are everywhere, and whether they want to admit to it or not, all that they do is make driving situations significantly worse for the rest of us drivers. I say that...

Failing to Signal
What is the most dangerous thing that you can do when you are driving on a crowded roadway with other drivers? Failing to signal is the perhaps one of the most dangerous things that drivers can do (or not do) when they are driving because using your turn signal lets other drivers know what your intentions are while you are traveling on a major road, highway or street. Why is failing to signal so dangerous? The following example may help to illustrate the point. While driving on the highway...

Driving Jobs
Everyone loves their job for one reason or another and everyone can’t stand their job for one reason or another. But what are some of the most popular and fun jobs in the country? Some of the most popular jobs in the country entail driving. Yes, driving for a living. This may seem monotonous, lengthy, and repetitive but these types of jobs can be very rewarding for the worker. Examples of these types of jobs are delivery drivers, mail carriers, police officers, firefighters, EMTs, truck...

Obeying the Law on the Road
There is a Judas Priest song called “Breaking the Law” and I think about that song title often when I'm on the road. It simply never ceases to amaze me at how many bad drivers there are out there. From following someone else too closely to changing lanes or turning without using your turn signal, it seems like the possibilites for bad driving are endless! Depending on where in the country you live, the laws for the roadways may be different. For example, if you live in the Washington D.C. area,...

Defensive Driving Part Four
This is part four of our five part set outlining tips and strategies of how to become a better defensive driver when taking to the roads each day. Why should you become a defensive driver? Defensive drivers are safer when behind the wheel and are able to anticipate what other drivers around them might do with their vehicles. Hopefully the tips we discuss in this article and in the previous ones will help drivers on the roads today become better defensively and safer when behind the wheel of...

Making Driving School Mandatory
When you become a new driver you take on the role of lots of responsibilities ranging from paying for your car as well as maintaining your car. You need to not only buy your car but then you’ll also need money for gas and insurance which cost quite a bit monthly, so basically only people with jobs can drive. Driving is a lot of responsibility which is why I feel that there are so many different fees associated with it and also why there is such a high age before being able to drive. With so...

Safety Tips For Passengers in Cars
When you are traveling in a car, there is nothing worse than a passenger who won't stop telling the driver how to drive. A lot of the time, passengers who are like this think that they are helping the driver by being a second set of 'eyes'. However, a lot of the time, these types of passengers are doing nothing more than simply annoying the driver and causing all sorts of undue problems. Not only can 'passenger seat drivers' cause the driver to become distracted, but a lot of the time, these...

Putting Your Headlights On
One of the things that people often forget about is the fact that whenever their windshield wipers are on, they are technically supposed to have their headlights on. There are all sorts of instances in which drivers are supposed to make sure that their headlights are turned on. However, the fail to do so either because they are not paying attention or because they simply do not know any better. Both of these explanations are truly unacceptable as forgetting to put your headlights on can result...

Controlling How You Drive
Controlling how you drive has a lot more to do with your skill as a driver as well as your knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the roadways. Controlling how you drive also means knowing how and when to control your emotions while you are driving. For example, too many times I have been in the car with someone who was having a bad day and decided to take it out on other unsuspecting drivers (of course with me in the car). This meant that they were running red lights, driving...
