The Otaku in the World of Trucking Sales

Talk to the no. 1 business blogger of the 21st century (who just happens to be Seth Godin), and he’ll tell you, you want to be “otaku”. Otaku is Japanese for ‘a person with an obsession’. In today’s workplace especially, you really can’t get far without a healthy obsession or two. Otaku are specialists in what they do, and masters of their trade. They focus on one thing, and earn themselves the reputation of being exceptional at what they do.

The coolest thing about being “otaku” is that you don’t have to do your own marketing buzz. Your business name becomes synonymous with the niche market you operate in. It becomes a household name, and if you’re really successful, you become the Hover of the vacuum cleaners, the Apple of computers, or the Red Bull of energy drinks.

Being “otaku” involves doing business with passionate people who that understand and admire what you do, people who are one step ahead of everyone else, and who are so in tune with a particular marketplace that they hear you sneeze a fraction of a second before you do. The sneeze is in reference to Godin’s viral marketing, which once you’ve sneezed, spreads like a virus. In the world of truckin’, being “otaku” means being a trucker at heart, understanding the equipment you’re selling, and loving the feel of oil and grim that only a digger derrick trucks mechanic knows.

I’ve heard sales guys being asked, is it the product or the sale that motivates you? In trucking sales, it’s got to be the product. There is just no way, a seasoned sales person can get their head around all there is to understand about bucket trucks, grapple trucks and boom trucks, and the reconditioning process, and hydraulic repairs, if they’re not passionate about being behind the wheel of a truck themselves. It’s like asking a used car dealer to sell IT hard-drives. Ask them to explain megabytes and gigabytes and RAM. Buyers have a 6th sense. They can always tell when the seller really gets what they’re talking about, or not.

I-80 Equipment Company ( is a trucking company with a finger on the pulse of their industry. They operate nationwide, and ship nationally and internationally. They offer a full range of trucks for sale and for rental. And having been in the business for over 15 years, since 1992, this means their focus is on the client. Let them do the asking, and you’ll find their needs assessment is dead-on. They know their trucks because they love what they do. It’s a simple as that. They’ve got “otaku”.

Visit their website, to see color photos, detailed descriptions and prices for a variety of used altec bucket trucks forestry trucks, boom trucks, crane trucks and digger derrick trucks. They have over 50 bucket trucks in stock and most of these trucks are featured in live high-definition videos. You can sign up for email alerts of new acquisitions on their expanding lot.

Don t Bargain on Buying that Bucket Truck Today
That’s what Jed. W. has to say about purchasing bucket trucks. “Don’t bargain on buying your truck fast, unless you know the right providers to go through. He was in the market for a bucket truck, and figured he’d have his financing sorted out by the end of the month at the latest, given the fact that he could afford to put down a decent down payment. His best friend, another truck driver, had laughed as said: “Good luck, pal. I reckon it’s going to take you longer than that!”, but even...

Finding the Right Truck Wheels for the Road
Some might say that finding the right truck wheels for the road has gotten a lot easier with most trucking companies now online. But if you’re looking for a hassle-free purchase, nothing beats working with a family-run professional transport provider. The thing is that if you go online, you’ll quickly get inundated with what’s on the market. When you’re talking to a seller who hasn’t met you yet, they are bound to err on the side of too much information. Here’s a classic example of how...

The Easiest Way is to Be First
In Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind (2001), Al Ries & Jack Trout throw out an interesting proposition. Their message to anyone who’s trying to market a product or service is that the easy way to get into a person’s mind is to be first. They say: “You just got to be first”. Here’s the example they come up with. Ask anyone, “What’s the name of the first person to walk on the moon?” You’re bound to get a few Neil Armstrong’s, especially given that 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of...

When You re Looking to Buy a Truck Talk to a Truck Driver
The best way when making any purchase, is to talk to people like you. If you’re looking for a good vet, talk to another dog owner. If you’re looking to buy a new PC, talk to someone who’s just bought one. If you’re looking to rent a holiday home, talk to someone who’s got a tan and who’s just come back from their holidays. And if you’re looking to buy a new company truck, talk to other truck owners. The idea is that recent buyers, who have just bought a truck themselves, have had to go...

Cherry Picking i80 Equipments
My Manager just loves to say to his staff, on a regular basis: “You want to be making money or saving money, it’s as simple as that “. And in these economic times, where it’s just that bit harder to turn a dime, it’s the saving money option which seems more readily achievable. Most employees, looking to keep their employment, want to send out a clear message to their employers that they are still the right person for the job. And this means, they want to demonstrate, that while they’re...

Earn the Pride of the Nation and then Go International
There is no one particular ‘right’ strategy for conquering a niche market. But you’d have to think that it makes sense to go local first. There’s something to be said for being the talk of your town, or state or even nation, before even venturing further afield. And then one day, ever so discretely, you just add a translator to your website, so that you become talk of the town in Chinese, French or Polish languages too. I 80 Equipment (, which has been serving the...

Rent to Own A Viable Option
Just ask around, and you’ll probably hear lots of buyers who have a bad purchase that they wish they hadn’t made, whether it’s a car, a computer or a house. When you’re looking to make a purchase, think about renting first. The bigger the purchase, and cost factor, the more this makes sense. For example, isn’t it actually a smart idea to live in the house you’re thinking about buying just to see if you actually hear the airplanes overhead, or if you like your neighbours or how bad your...

Support Family Run Businesses
When you are thinking about becoming a client of a particular company, look at their employees. Typically a company which operates successfully and profitably is doing so because they have managed to create a work environment that motivates their employees to be top performers and to take pride in their work. Start by looking at how long the company has been in operation and how long each employee has been with the company. Company staff retention is a sure sign of client retention....

Minimizing Emissions with Hybrid Bucket Trucks
Since so many public utilities, city and county governments use bucket trucks to do all kinds of maintenance and construction work, there is a great deal of interest in finding ways to minimize fuel costs as well as minimizing the impact so many vehicles can have on the environment. A municipality will probably not just use bucket trucks, but boom trucks of various kinds, derrick digger trucks, crane trucks and dump trucks. Any technology that can help bring the short and long-term costs of...

Don t Make Feature Based Purchases Without Facing the Fear Factor
Fear Selling is all about getting to that dreaded question of “What’s it going to cost you if…?”. Here’s a classic example of fear selling in action. An IT Sales Rep. calls up the purchasing manager or CEO of a company and says, “Mr Customer, I work for Anti-Virus Software Ltd. We’ve got a great deal on at only $49.99 a month…”. If this is the approach he uses, the sales guy might not get any further than this. And that’s simply because he’s likely to be one of the ten other sales guys...
