For most of the country, March means warmer weather and fewer clothes. Sweaters and coats are exchanged with short sleeves and shorts or skirts. Arms, legs, and body are exposed to the warmth of the sun - and the eyes of young men.
Parent's worries increase at the same rate their teen's clothing decreases. Telling our teen not to wear a particular outfit, not to dress so revealing, or to cover up will most likely be responded with: "It's the hottest thing this spring!" or "That's what today's teens wear!" - making us feel old and out of the loop.
Fortunately there are quite a few things parents can do when it comes to the way your teen dresses:
Know what's hot - visit web sites such as: www.teenfashionista.com - a blog monitored by Casey featuring fashion trends, styles, and shopping advice for teens.
www.fashionclub.com - an excellent web site for the teen who wants more than just the latest trends. It has a fashion club and a career studio which is affiliated with the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.
Both of these web sites have fashions for girls as well as boys.
Look at your teen's magazines and discuss models and clothing. Help your teen to decide which types of clothing would fit best with their individual body type.
Visit web - sites that give advice on which clothing fits what body type with your teen. Two web sites I found very helpful are:
Fashion Tips Buy Clothes to suit Your Shape - for girls www.be.young.dsl.pipex.com/fashion/fashin-shape.htm
www.askandyaboutclothes.com - for boys
Go shopping with your teen. Spend a day at the mall trying on all kinds of different outfits, even those you do not intend to buy, wear, or would not be "caught dead" in. Comment on how the outfits look, and what you do or do not like about them.
Besides having a day with a lot of laughs, you will also have the opportunity to find out about your teen's taste in clothes. You will learn which tops and bottoms your daughter finds too revealing, and give you the opportunity to listen and to learn about your teen's opinions. You also will have the chance to reinforce moral standards while creating fond memories that will last a lifetime.
Fathers - explain to your daughter that the way she dresses does affect how boys perceive her. It is not necessary to paint an ugly picture, but girls need the male perspective to understand the feelings they evoke in boys when dressing provocatively.
Make it an interactive conversation, giving her ample time and opportunity to ask questions. This is a great opportunity for a dad to protect his daughter and show her how much he cares about her. She will also be more aware of the opposite gender and be careful not to provoke them or tease them in any other way.
Parenting your teenager doesn't have to be frustrating - visit www.parentingateenager.net, where parents can find Christina's articles and her book, news for Education K-12 and College, LIVE Counseling, and a variety of other tools and resources for both communicating with their teen and helping parents deal with issues they are struggling with.

•Parenting Your Teenager Trust vs Control
During my phone sessions with parents, one issue comes up over and over again. Parents are frustrated because their teenager does not listen to them anymore. Some are focusing on finding answers how to regain control of their teenager while others are wondering how to build a good relationship.
It is possible to regain control by restricting your teenager and forcing him to do as you say. Parents can monitor their every move and bombard them with questions. Your teen, however, will most...
•Help She s 16 And A Different Person
Recently a mother approached me; she was very upset. Her daughter, who had just turned 16, was suddenly acting like a different person. Her daughter's circle of friends used to be within the top of the class, now she was spending her time with less successful students. In her opinion, her daughter did not study enough anymore, and her daughter had also said that she was not going to college!
No wonder this mom was upset. Drastic changes like these would overwhelm and worry any parent.
The...
•Parenting Teenager Take Time For Your Teen
BookWire's Year in Reviews Magazine, December 2006 issue, lists a review of my book Help Me With My Teenager! A Step-by-step Guide for Parents that Works.
All in all a very positive review, the reviewer states: Help Me With My Teenager! speaks in a clear and understandable language directly to parents. Some techniques, such as stopping whatever you're doing when your kid is ready to talk, will be difficult for already busy parents to implement. However, the extra effort promises to pay...
•Parenting Teenagers Teen Eating Disorders
Eating disorders have long been a serious problem among people of all ages. However, this disease usually begins somewhere in the pre-teen stages of life, and although many adolescent boys suffer with this disorder, it usually affects and is much more severe in young girls.
People who do suffer from an eating disorder like to place blame on factors such as television and family life-styles. Although these situations do influence eating disorders, the basis for this disease lies within the...
•Parenting Teenagers Communicating With Your Teenager
Communication is the single most important aspect when parenting a teenager.
We can give them a sense of compassion, understanding, and support. We can listen to their opinion. We can peacefully discuss a situation.
On the other hand, we can convey to them that we are disappointed and angry about what they did. We can scold them for not doing what we told them to.
The way we respond to, or address, our teenagers will determine if they will come to us for answers and advice the next time....
