A few tips to help you succeed on eBay.

Before you list your items for sale on eBay do you ever check that they are actually selling?

We all know that it is easy to get your items listed on eBay but are your listings successful?

Did you know that you can do an advanced search for completed listings? Why would you want to search for completed listings? I hear you ask.

The simple reason is that it will show you whether your items are actually being sold, and if so for what price.

Here is how you check the demand for your items.

Whilst on the main eBay page click the advanced search text, which is beside the main search button. This will take you to the advanced search page where you will find many options, but for this example we are going to concentrate on completed listings.
Enter a couple of keywords relating to your item in the box displayed. Just beneath is the category selection, make sure that you have ‘all categories’ displayed.

In the next section of the page, ‘Search including’, click on the check box for completed listings so that it shows a small tick. Then click the blue search button, towards the top of the page.

Your results will then be displayed. You can now scroll down the page and see the amount of results for those listings. If the item sold it will display a small red box with ‘sold’ written in it. It will also display the end price and the amount of bids it received.

What if, Q & A’s

Q, What if there are a wide variety of items displayed, and many of them are not the items I am looking for?

A, If you find that there a variety of other items displayed then click the back button on your browser to return to the advanced search page. Then in the box below your keywords enter words to ‘exclude from your search’. Enter words relating to the items that you not wish to display and click search again. Repeat the process as much as is needed.

Q, What if I find pages and pages of items similar to mine and see that some have been sold very cheap, when they’re worth more?

A, If you think that your item is worth a certain amount then click the back button on your browser again to return to the advanced search page. Scroll down until you come to the ‘price’ section, click the check box to display a tick again and enter the price that you think your item is worth, enter the price in the ‘from’ box and leave the ‘to’ box empty. Click the main search button again to display the results. This will tell you if your item is selling for your desired price, or even more.

Q, What if I find loads of items similar to mine that have not sold?

A, If you find lots of similar items that have not sold then take a little time to look at some of them. You may find that the seller is trying to charge too much for postage. The item may have a poor photo or no photo at all. The listing title may be of poor quality or very short, which will affect the search results. The sales page may be poorly written or in a format that is hard to read. You may even find that the seller has stated loads of silly terms and conditions of sale on the sales page, which only puts people off.
Here is a quick tip, it is always best to write your adverts in black and use an easy read font, like Ariel or Verdana, size 12 or 14. For headings and sub-headings use a colour like Blue or Red, bold, size 14 or 18. This will make them stand out for people to notice. Never put terms or conditions on your sales pages, use the returns section to state your returns policy.

Q, What if I think the items have good pictures, P&P charges and sales pages yet still don’t seem to be selling.

A, If you find that there are lots of items similar to yours that look good in title, photo, P&P charges and on the sales page and yet they are still not selling it could be that the items are not in demand, or that the starting price is to high. To check this out all you need to do is click on the item title and you will see the sales page. Scroll down the page to the bottom of the advert and, if activated, it will display a counter. The number displayed is the amount of visitors to that page. If the number is quite high then it could be the starting price that is putting people off, as a high number shows there is a high interest in the item. If on the other hand the number is very low then it could be that there is little or know interest in the item. If that is the case then don’t waste your time or money listing it, just move onto another item and repeat the process..
