Over dosage and addiction
Prolonged consumption of Zolpidem at higher doses over a period of time may cause it to become habitual and eventually get oneself addicted to the drug. Despite problems with addiction, Zolpidem is still commonly prescribed because it remains a very effective treatment for Sleep, and studies have suggested its abuse potential is lower than older alternatives. However, this does not suggest it has no potential for addiction. Treatment options and methods for addiction may vary with respect to the intensity, mindset and the environment.

Zolpidem as a controlled substance
Controlled substances fall under five distinct types with respect to medicinal use and the potential for addiction. Schedule I drugs like are completely restricted, while Schedule II drugs are the most restricted drugs available via a prescription. Zolpidem has less potential for abuse relative to more restricted drugs. Zolpidem is classified as Schedule IV, which means the following: Acquisition, possession or use of the drug is illegal without a prescription, doctor shopping and trying to fill a fake prescription are also illegal, giving away Zolpidem is a crime even if the drug was legally acquired, operating a vehicle while impaired by the drug and accidents that occur during improper use can involve other legal liabilities.

Potential legal consequences
Possession of the drug without a valid prescription is by itself considered a crime since the drug is a potential narcotic. Dealing, trading, stealing or selling the drug may attract any or all of the following penalties: Jail time, probation, legal fees and court costs. Fake prescriptions, doctor shopping and unauthorized selling of legally bought Zolpidem to unauthorized people will attract legal consequences.

Why is Zolpidem restricted?
Gamma-Aminobutyric acid is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system that regulates neuronal excitability. Zolpidem binds to GABA receptor sites increasing their efficiency and the frequency of nerve cell transmissions. The tranquilizing effects of Zolpidem make the drug effective in treating Sleep disorders and panic attacks, but the drug is only intended for short-term applications. Increase in the GABA tolerance results in the decrease in the regulation of memory, concentration, alertness, heart rate, coordination and blood pressure.
